During the party at Play's house, all of the dance sequences were done with no music. A.J. Johnson choreographed her and Tisha Campbell-Martin's routine for the battle. The toe-touch and kicks were actually signature moves for Kid-N-Play. They had become very popular as back up dancers for Salt-N-Pepa using these and more acrobatic stunts. The music was added after the dancing had been shot.
Robin Harris and John Witherspoon improvised most of their lines.
House Party was originally written for DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, a.k.a. DJ Jazzy Jeff and Will Smith. This happened because New Line Cinema won a lawsuit against them due to their song A Nightmare on My Street and one of the conditions were that they had to appear in a New Line film. Director Reginald Hudlin refused to cast them in the movie based on that term.
This was final film released before the death of Robin Harris, who died nine days after the movie was released. However, it was not his last one as he appeared in Mo' Better Blues (1990), which was released approximately five months after he died.
Near the end of the movie, Play suggest they go to his house and watch Krush Groove (1985) and Beat Street (1984). Both Paul Anthony and B-Fine were in the former.
Based on a short film that served as the thesis film for director Reginald Hudlin for his Harvard University degree.
Is considered a cult classic, highlighting the "Golden Age of Hip-Hop" music when it's culture was centered around parties, fun, and consensual affairs rather than the drugs, violence, and misogyny that came after its predominance in the early to mid nineties.
Movie was filmed at Plays real life home in Los Angeles, California.
Anthony Johnson, who plays the guy with short jheri curl hair at the party, returned in House Party 3 (1994) as Butcher.
When Pop shows up at the party looking for his son, he says the line 'test tube baby' - used in Robin Harris' real-life stand up comedy performances.
The quote, "If it's going to be this kind of party I am going to stick my dick in the mashed potatoes!" is not original to this film, nor the Beastie Boys song "B-Boys makin' with the Freak Freak" - but from the punchline on a 1972 comedy album by Mantan Moreland titled "That Ain't My Finger!".

The first three movies in the "House Party" film series begin with Kid's character having a dream of some sort. In this film he dreams of a party and the roof being blown off of a house, in the "Pajama Jam" he has a nightmare about attending college, and in "House Party 3" he dreams about his upcoming marriage. "House Party 4" and "5" do not continue with the dream sequence.
