Pierce Brosnan was contracted to do the show for seven seasons. NBC decided to cancel the show at the end of the fourth season due to low ratings, leaving Brosnan free to play James Bond in The Living Daylights (1987). However, Brosnan's television contract gave NBC 60 days to reverse the cancellation. During that time, the publicity over Brosnan's selection as James Bond led to an unexpected boost in Remington Steele's ratings. That boost, plus viewer protests and a failed attempt to sell the show to another network, gave NBC second thoughts about the cancellation. The network approached the Bond producers about a deal that would allow Brosnan to play both James Bond and Remington Steele the following year without any scheduling conflicts. Eventually, Albert R. Broccoli famously told NBC "James Bond will not be Remington Steele and Remington Steele will not be James Bond." NBC finalized its decision to renew the show, causing Brosnan to lose the role of James Bond to Timothy Dalton. Brosnon's dilemma was almost identical to that of Roger Moore who could not get out of the role of The Saint to play Bond. NBC made six episodes for the show's fifth season, and then canceled it for good in the spring of 1987.
Like her co-star Stephanie Zimbalist could not get out of her contract for the fifth season and lost out on a potentially lucrative role she had been offered, that of Anne Lewis in 'Robocop'. She had even gone so far as to cut her hair for the role.
