Mr.Death

Mr.Death

This episode is a Remarkable twist on Courtroom Drama and "The Psychic Investigator"

One of my favorite shows was the original Perry Mason from late 50's early 60's. Mix that in with "Supernatural" events and investigators, you got my attention.

But usually in TV shows, the Supernatural "Detective" or other medium is contrived, they always follow some kind of cardboard cutout. Not so here, but she had been in a sense, "contrived". More about this in a bit.

But let's shelf that for now - Where does Dorian Sleep? Never thought of that, he sleeps with the MX's - And when DRN is late for work, Kennex takes the elevator down to the MX "Dorm" - And we get to see a disturbing image of an MX's anatomy. Kennex just has to pop the question - Is DRN like that too? Well, suffice it to say, that the DRN is just as disturbed by the MX's "Ken and Barby" anatomy as Kennex is.

The Courtarena we see in this episode is one where the witnesses can testify from a remote location. But the Safehouse had been compromised and one of the Witnesses killed- It all points to the guy on trial, Avery (Graham Miller) - But there is not one bit of DNA or Fingerprints that can tie him to it.

I wanted to comment on our two witnesses, but on this date, IMDb does not have most of the proper guest cast listed. One of them is a "Medium Psychic, on a good day, a Petite Psychic" - "Maya" played by Megan Fergusen.

The odd thing here, is that she had been made into a Psychic by some procedure which is talked about briefly. So, like in The 6th Sense, she sees, or rather hears dead people. But only, Ironically, because she was made that way. But the fact that this whole concept is beyond belief is worked into the story, in Kennex' disbelief in it. The Episode suspends it's own disbelief.

Kennex, DRN and Stahl fringe out why the original Victim, a doctor who worked with human eggs, was killed. And so the pieces of this episode start falling into place, not leaving us much of a chance to guess it before it is revealed.

There are some elusive bad guys who have a connection to Avery, but Avery dangles the fact that Maldonado won't be able to connect him to the crime in front of her nose, and also the fact that she is still single.

In fact, this case is Maldonado's Revenge against this antagonism, she in fact finds a way to dangle what Avery wants in front of his nose - And takes it away, all of it. With Kennex and Dorian's help, and Dorian shows off some physical prowess that we didn't know was in him - Because someone he had feelings for was endangered.

If a Droid like Dorian ever existed, it, or rather, He would be remarkable. But in this future world that resembles a Short Story by Ron Goulart (Who Ghost-Wrote "Tek Wars" for William Shatner) - It is treated as Commonplace. In Goulart's worlds and books, we see much the same thing we see in this show - Sexbots with Human Skin, new drugs that are partially technological, Droids with Attitude, and a Police Department specially qualified to handle it all.

As we see one of the Psychic's Visions comes true for Kennex, Dorian himself gives that person a remarkable gift.

Some of the episodes of this show are rather straight forward and simple, in the case of this one there is much going on. So we get a Courtroom Drama, a Psychic Investigator, and some procedural police work all in one. At the end of the day it all "Kennex".

The whole medium/psychic aspect of this episode was really disappointing.

A perpetuation of afterlife beliefs, leaving people still dealing with their fear of death in the first way put forth to them, the simplest and easiest way. Rather than dealing with the fear of death in a realistic, evidence based way, it teaches one to focus on the invention of another life(an afterlife). Which implicitly devalues the one life all evidence shows is their only one. Anything that devalues one's perception of life like an afterlife belief is so sad and disturbing.

I was hoping that a more thoughtful analysis of life would be found in a show that addresses A.I.
