Sometimes we can mistake contentment for happiness, until happiness comes along to make us realize that we were only content in the first place.

99 Percent Sure is a story about the difference between contentment and true happiness. Steven Paige wrote a best-selling book almost by accident, and at the age of 23, he has financial security and critical acclaim on his side. When Steven meets Val, a bookstore clerk who is both outspoken and sarcastic, it is obvious that the two are polar opposites. But just as Steven is drawn to Val's independent spirit, she is drawn to his humility and family-oriented nature. When a career opportunity in another state arises, Val feels the need to jump at the chance. She doesn't want to leave Steven behind, but he refuses to go along, fearful of leaving the cocoon of his safe and comfortable world. But only after Val is gone does Steven realize that he allowed his happiness to walk away. With no knowledge of her whereabouts, Steven will do whatever it takes to find Val and make things right, even if it means shedding his private shell.

What a wonderful romance, splendidly played by a phenomenal cast. In particular: The female lead, Erin Mulgrew was simply amazing; and Chris Morris, who masterfully executed an incredibly risky supporting role. Each of the major characters in this picture had the potential of becoming a caricature or worse. The film makers took on the challenge, wrote a brilliant script and found the perfect people to fill the roles. this is what independent film is supposed to be, people making movies where they are with the talent that is already there. This is very much a Philadelphia production, but it gives me hope for all the regional film in this country. There is a massive unseen talent base in cities outside of New York or Los Angeles, and this film is a shining example of what is possible in contemporary American film making.
