The car race (aka "Chicky Run") between Riff (Mekhi Phifer) and Paco (Guillermo Díaz), where both racers race to the edge of a cliff, with the first person jumping out of the car is considered the "chicken" is similar to the "Chicky Run" in the legendary film, Rebel Without a Cause (1955). Ironically, actress Natalie Wood who played Judy, the "Chicky Run's" starter in that film is the mother of actress Natasha Gregson Wagner who plays Julie Rubels (the pregnant teenage in Mr. Clark's classroom) in this movie.

In some countries, the title became a direct pun at the translated title of the film Dangerous Minds. In Portugal, the film was translated as Mentes Pirosas ("Tacky Minds"), as Dangerous Minds was titled Mentes Perigosas (lit. "Dangerous minds")
