This dead town of Baux, in Provence, in early ages, was inhabited by cave dwellers. Visited by the Phoenicians, it was captured successively, by the Romans, the Byzantines and the Visigoths. It afterwards became the splendid capital of the Southern States, and during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, or Revival of art, the town of Baux was quite brilliant. After becoming one of the greatest strongholds of Calvinism, it was destroyed at his greatest height of magnificence by Cardinal Richelieu. Now it is only a heap of ruins, retaining the traces of all its successive stages, and remaining a subject of admiration to visitors.
