Halloween
In 1992, Dana Ewell hired/cajoled/put up an associate to murder his wealthy parents and his sister in an act of savagery that most people would believe warrants the death penalty, although when push came to shove, the jury was deadlocked. It was a crime carried out for the basest of motives: money.
Ewell was in the frame from early on in spite of having the perfect alibi, perhaps for the wrong reasons. Indifference to the death of loved ones is just as valid a reaction as shock or extreme grief. This documentary speaks to family, detectives, a juror, and even the woman who found the bodies, but where it stands out is in showing the extreme lengths to which the police will go to get their man, which in this case involved not only intense surveillance but technological wizardry, something that was more than justified. Fast forward a quarter of a century, and we are seeing even more advanced technology being used not simply to bring murderers to book but to spy on low level trouble-makers and totally innocent people, including a prospective President of the United States.
