Uncle Sam and the Bolsheviki - I.W.W. Rat (1919) Online

This 1919 cartoon, issued about the time that Palmer was busy jailing every leftist he could find, shows a farmer braining a huge rat branded with "I.W.W." before it can eat the grain. As this was produced by the Ford Motor Company, this is an interesting piece to see, both because of its political confusion of the left -- the I.W.W. was syndicalist, not Marxist, about like calling a Grangist a John Bircher -- and its open appeal to everyone to the right of Norman Thomas. Thomas would run for president of the United States and garner a million votes while still in prison.

Technically, this is a very primitive cartoon, little more than a quarter-animated newspaper political cartoon. The simple method of animation is itself an interesting choice, as its primitiveness and simplicity was clearly intended to appeal to 'little people.'
