A follow-up TV movie has several times been planned. In the mid-1990s a complete script, called 'Deadline' (not to be confused with the first series episode 'Deadline.') was drawn up, but fell through. Writer Steven Moffat and a number of the cast members continue to express interest at a follow up.
Season 1 was filmed on location. However season 2 was filmed at Pinewood Studios in a reconstructed set, adjacent to the Gotham City set for Batman (1989) that was filming at the same time. This was due to the building in which the series had been filmed being demolished as part of a redevelopment. This is also why you do not see the exterior of the building from here onwards, except in stock establishing shots.
Spike and Lynda's relationship in the series grew out into a real one for Julia Sawalha and Dexter Fletcher. They were an item for several years and even lived together before going their separate ways.
One of the show's most unique features is the characters' voices talking over the end credits. It was discontinued after Season 2 because 'Steven Moffatt' felt it wasn't working as well as it did in Season 1. Also, the actors grew fed up of showing up for the recordings because it meant they had to come in on the weekend.
Colin Nutley, who directed episodes "Page One" (1.1) and "Photo Finish" (1.2), was displeased with the results and asked for his name to be removed from the credits.
The working title was "The Norbridge Files"
Abigail Docherty played 2 characters in the series. Suzy Norton the chess genius in 'Picking Up the Pieces' (2.2) and the voice of Mary Bryant in 'The Rest of My Life' (2.10)
Julia Sawalha (Lynda Day) and Dexter Fletcher (Spike Thomson) are the only actors to appear in all 43 episodes of the series. In second place is Paul Reynolds (Colin Mathews), who appeared in every episode except Press Gang: How to Make a Killing (1989) and Press Gang: The Big Hello (1991).
The character of Spike, originally intended to be British, was made American to try and make the series more attractive to potential American markets.
Julia Sawalha (Lynda Day), Dexter Fletcher (Spike Thomson), Paul Reynolds (Colin Mathews), Mmoloki Chrystie (Frazz Davis) and Lucy Benjamin (Julie Craig) are the only actors to appear in the first and last episodes of the series: Press Gang: Page One (1989) and Press Gang: There Are Crocodiles (1993).
The Junior Gazette's address was Unit 2, Nelson Trading/Industrial Estate, Norbridge NOR 8BT. The newsroom telephone number was (0721) 6931.
Paul Reynolds later worked with future Doctor Who (2005) (TV Series) actors Christopher Eccleston and Alex Kingston on two separated acting projects. Paul Reynolds starred opposite Christopher Eccleston in Let Him Have It (1991) and he starred opposite Alex Kingston in Croupier (1998). Christopher Eccleston played The Ninth Doctor in 2005 and Alex Kingston played recurring character River Song from 2008 - 2015. Steven Moffat became a regular writer and succeeded Russell T. Davies as showrunner from 2010 - 2017. He was replaced by Chris Chibnall.
