Like the French film "Pierrot le fou (1965)", also "Karvat (1974)" is adapted from the crime novel "Obsession" by author Lionel White. In Pierrot le fou White is uncredited and in Karvat his first name is misspelled as "Lionell".

Contains probably the only ever love making scene of animated (silk?) kerchiefs; complete with sounds of the passion involved.

Was the second film to receive K-18 rating (no one under 18 admitted) in Finland. The first was "Sensuela (1973)".

Lonesome Orange Kid

Lonesome Orange Kid

Karvat is truly a triumph of art-trash-avantgardefilms. Not just only in Finland, but in The Whole Wide World! It has it all: unemployment, murder, robbery, rape, a gangster dwarf, false identities, helicopter rides, sleazy parties, sex, femme fatale and ordinary guy as superman. And a magic nut! And alternative ending. Etc. Etc.

It has same kind of trashy magic that Turkish oddball-movies had in the 70's.

Unfortunately Karvat is a black & white-movie. But you can't always get everything.

Braincandy for openminded filmviewers!

It is based on Lionel White's novel 'Obsession'.

It was a few years ago, when I saw this film, but I remember that I liked it very much. It was a very good agent parody full of strange characters. I think that this film is almost as good as Seppo Huunonens most popular film Lampaansyöjät. Karvat is based on the same Lionel White's novel as Jean-Luc Godard's Pierrot le fou, but still I think that the Finnish adaptation is the best--maybe that's because I've always disliked Godard's artificial style to make film.

I would like to recommend this film to everyone, but Karvat is very hard to find, even in Finland...But if you have enough luck to find it, so watch it!!!
