Crossing (2018) Online
Crossing' is comprised of two short films. Inspired by true stories, the first short film follows a young Irish woman who is forced by her country's anti-abortion laws to take an 8-hour ferry to Liverpool in order to have an abortion. The second short film is a visual documentation of this ferry. It aims to recreate inside the viewer the feeling of suspense and isolation that these women experience on their journey. As it stands, abortion is illegal in Ireland except in life-threatening cases. The termination of a pregnancy- even in the cases of rape or unviable foetus- can result in a prison sentence of up to 14 years. Because of these laws, thousands of Irish women and girls travel to the UK every year in order to have a safe abortion. The journey is often taken alone and in secret. Those who cannot afford overnight accommodation have no choice but to return on the same day as their procedure.
