"Loops" is a 3-minute short film from Canada that was released back in 1940, during World War II, which means that this little movie had its 75th anniversary last year. The director is Norman McLaren and as usual he made this film in cooperation with the National Film Board of Canada. It shows us an entirely different approach to animation as this film was made during the Golden Age of Animation, in which Disney and Warner Bros. came up with some very memorable animated short films. McLaren is experimentalism, always has been, and his approach is certainly much more difficult to appreciate and this also applies to me. The colors (listed in the title of my review) as well as the sound effects weren't bad, but overall I am just not enough of an experimental film fan to like this very short movie. I have to give it a thumbs-down. Not recommended.

I will freely admit that I enjoyed this experimental short from Norman McLaren while at the same time saying I really don't know how to explain it. Basically we've got a blue background and a music score that whenever a noise is made we get an animated image on the background.

If you're familiar with the work of McLaren then you already know that dozens of people could watch his films and walk away with a different idea of what they were about. I honestly have no idea what he was trying to say or do with this film but it was well-made for the most part and it kept you glued to what was going on for its three minute running time.
