The music initially chosen for the climactic finale was "American Pie" by Don McLean, however when putting it to the scene, it seemed to overpower the scene and the music supervisors wanted a song more relevant to that period of the late 80s. They settled on "With or Without You" by U2 as they felt it best captured the emotional beats of the scene. The band is very protective of that song's usage in media, but luckily some members were fans of the show and allowed it to be featured. The licensing only cleared on the very last day of mixing the episode.

The inspiration for the Americans were based on the case of Tim and Alex Vavilov, whose parents Andrei Bezrukov and Elena Vavilova, acted as Russian sleeper agents in the United States.

Matthew Rhys won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, his first win from three nominations for the series.

When a spy is caught behind enemy lines, at some point he might be repatriated to his home country, as part of a "spy swap". But, since the mission was not sanctioned by the KGB, Arkady raised these concerns to Oleg's father.

"Backstop" refers to the means to maintain the "cover" , or false identity of a spy. It could mean documents, financial records, and a phone number of a person who will vouch for him.

Joel Fields & Joseph Weisberg won the 2018 Emmy Award in the Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series category for Ameeriklased: START (2018).

The family's escape to Canada was foreshadowed by the previous episode, in which Elizabeth prepared Canadian cash and fake Canadian passports.

Phillip asked his handler Arkady Ivanovich to pull the car over. The middle name of Arkady - Ivanovich - is what is known as a patronymic name, as in a name that is chosen to honor a child's father. In this case, Arkady father's name is Ivan.

Great ending to one of the best shows on TV over the past 6 yrs. Unlike some of the others who are griping about loose ends- I thought that angle was perfectly played. I liked the fact that the stories of all the complex characters were NOT wrapped up in a tidy bow. To answer all questions and close every angle to this story would have seemed contrived and phoney. Loved this show and will miss it.

Huge thanks to the actors, the writers and all those who worked on this show. Loved all the seasons of The Americans but sixth season and series finale brought the show on par or even on top of the most acclaimed spy novels ever written. Probably never enjoyed a TV series so much (and I'm a series junky) and this final episode was the emotional climax it deserved. Characters, story and storytelling remain consistent across all the seasons without ever falling to cheap "filler" episodes or idiotic and illogical decisions by the characters so the story can move on which many tv series, movies or even books often have to recur to. Top notch entertainment with meticulous historical period description and narration, dense with moral dilemmas it immerses the viewer in the hearth of the cold war leaving every kind of moral judgment to the viewer instead of forcing it on him. Again, THANKS ! FREE OLEG !

I don't have anything more to say. I rest my case.

The quality of the finale even exceeds the excpetionally high quality of the show. I will reveal nothing, except to say that it is satisfying to anyone who has watched the series from start to finish. I will truly miss the show, but I am thrilled to see that the the series was concluded the way any great story should end (with great writing, and not due to internal network politics or advertising dollars). A+

And so one of the best shows of all time ends. I have to say, it wasn't at all what I expected. There was no death this episode, which is truly shocking. On one hand, I feel like the show could have opted to have a really climactic, explosive finale filled with all kinds of deaths, and it chose not to. I remember a few weeks ago when there was an article stating that in order for the show to cement its all-time status, the finale had to be one of complete tragedy. I myself thought that no series finale should be the deciding factor in that way, but at the same time I do think had the show opted to end with an obvious tragedy (Phil and Elizabeth die, their kids die, they got caught and their kids suffer, etc) it could have come full circle for a lot of people. Instead, they will likely never see their kids again (Paige's fate seems even more of a tragedy with that final shot) and they go back to Russia with the realization that the work they have done for the last 6 seasons has almost been for nothing. That's a much more subtle, less obvious "tragedy" that I didn't see coming when the season premiered. Especially in regards to Elizabeth, who I never predicted would sway the way that she did these last three episodes.

Having seen the entire show now, it's actually more fitting that it ended this way and not the two leads dying or being incarcerated, and it's fitting that the penultimate episode was the one that seemed like the intensity peak of the season (although the Stan confrontation was of course super intense). It's also fitting because this show was always about the family these leads had, their marriage in particular, so that final shot is perfect in many ways.

Special kudos to the actors. Russell and Rhys have always gotten their credit, but this was Noah Emmerich's peak. His devastation was completely heartbreaking to watch.

Farewell to one of the greatest series of all time.

The Americans, thank you for amazing six years storytelling. Thank you Philipe, thank you Elizabeth, thank you Stan and all those who created such an engaging show, full of passion and excitement. I guess while watching the last episode my heartbeat was over 100 wishing everything goes well to all!. It's very rare that you equally love bad guys and good guys in a movie. I need nothing more to say.

This is my favorite finale of any series I've ever watched.

Going into this finale, I was thinking about what they're going to do in the way of so many other shows season and series finales: it will be filled with final twists and culminate with finding out who dies at the end.

The Americans didn't go the easy route of other shows. Instead, it showed incredible respect for the characters and the complex relationships they had spent years developing with a slow, thoughtful finale. To its final moment, it wasn't a show about Cold War spying, it was about the toll of Cold War spying on families. The finale embraced this as well or better than any episode in the series.

I usually leave finales feeling either satisfied or annoyed. I left this one thinking about what it would be like to be Elizabeth or Philip or Paige or Henry or Stan. It's a much powerful feeling.

The bittersweet ending was perfect. The entire Jennings family had to make difficult choices. Phillip said his handler warned him in the beginning it would be a hard life. It left you thinking about the futures of all the characters. Stan made a very difficult decision which again proved his humanity. I will miss this show very much.

This episode is so excellent that your emotions are fully in reaction to the story and characters, not the end of the show as you'd imagine.

To the review saying this episode was "a middle finger to the show's devoted fans" or some such, complaining too many questions were left unanswered and they should know EXACTLY what every moment in the episode meant:

the questions are purposely left unanswered and this is why the episode is good. Wrapping everything up with a neat little bow on top is what would have been an insult to the audience.

The interpretation you want spelled out for you regarding Elizabeth's abstract conception is not supposed to be explained because of the nature of the conception itself (though it's pretty obvious what it meant, imo).

The best aspect of this episode, and much of the series, is that nothing is spoon fed to us. Being left with things to contemplate and imagine is a hallmark of excellent writing, acting, direction and editing.

I don't usually review stuff as I believe a lot of reviews are opinionated and bias. This one will probably be that way too, however, this series has been grade A from the get go and my biggest fear was the ending would be, should I say, one of them. Far from it. This was perfect. Everyone doing what they felt was right and the way it was filmed and presented, even down to the music, was just bang on. By the way, Dire Straits, Brothers in Arms was genius. A brilliant show that will be greatly missed.

I can't even .. the finale was so emotional ,, i actually did not know it's the series finale up until today . The show's plot is without a single doubt one of the most entangled, most connected i'v ever seen .. over six years it never failed to deliver ,, each and every episode is cooked perfectly to leave a thread to the next one.

The cast ,, it was the first time i'v ever seen them in my life back in 2012 ,, but man!! now they went to be the gossip of the day every week they pop out on the screen. I mean, Matthew Rhys is a British actor who plays an Russian spy in America !! how diffecult could that get, but he handled it like a pro ,, Keri Russell was always amazing but this season she exceeded everything !!! her facial expressions when she kills someone ,, WOW .. I mean the couple made us root for the bad guys !! or were they really bad guys !! just made us confused :D lol .. Noah Emmerich "Stan" was amazing this season too ... Oh and the heartbreak at the end ..

The show for me is right there with the very few unforgettable ones .. and I'm not going to complain why they cancelled it and all ,, maybe it's the right time to do so ,, and they gave us a good swift ending... so goodbye and salute to fine series.

This is by far my favorite show! The finale was just what I expected from this show, leaving you with sadness and a scary feeling of the unknown and how hard it is too be separated from the people you love, because of the choices you made. This show will be missed. Also great actors!!! They deserve awards for this!

I have no words coming to my mind exept...genious. The final was just a "chef d'oeuvre"...it tells you that in life it's not always good or bad and that thing can be grey.... The trio of star actors are just simply incredible (Mat, Kery, and Noah)......I hope too see them in many more movies. Very sad to see the show ending.... But damn...that was so good....one of the best ever with Sopranos in my heart.

I will never forget it.

Long live to the Jennings!

The Americans is a fantastic show, and it had a fantastic finale. A real goodbye to the characters, seeing Elizabeth's pain as a mother. I am saddened that the show is over, but as a fan I am content.

I was wondering for so long how this show would end I was hoping that Philip will see his other son in Russia but it ended so quickly. I give reviews very rarely but this was perfect episode and ending of a great TV Show.

Thank you and farewell.

Wrote a review on the show itself, when it was still in it's first season. It was a review based on the perspective from a European who has lived in Russia and the United States both.

I gave it a solid 8 back then, it has had some dips and lulls but the final season, the finale in particular is nothing short of gorgeous - and one of those perfect endings which make it feel rounded and can still leave your imagination to run wild with what might happen to the titular characters next.

On a personal note was particularly amazed to see my favorite spot in Moscow featured. The 'balcony' scene, where Philip and Elizabeth get out of Arcady's car in front of Moscow University - that overlooks much of the center of Moscow. It also triggered my most minor and trivial of gripes though.

I lived in Russia in the year 2000. Back then at least all the most prominent buildings still brandished bright red stars on their rooftops. Whilst in this '1987' version you see none at all.

Regardless of that, this final season was brilliant in foreshadowing the rise of Putin and his oligarch cabals without ever mentioning his name.

No words...

There's literally no words for me to say.

I wished we had more episodes left, but this was enough.
