This is regarded as the most profitable short of all time. It was made on a budget of $8,000, and has grossed over $1 million.
When Star wars: Osa IV - Uus lootus (1977) was re-released in 1997 in a "Special Edition" with new digital effects, producer Michael Wiese responded by re-releasing this short in its own "Special Edition" with footage replaced with new digital effects and graphics.
Paul Frees was an obvious choice as the narrator for this short - he had narrated the original advance teaser trailer for Star wars: Osa IV - Uus lootus (1977).
When "Hardware Wars" was released on home video in the early '80s, it was included on a compilation called "Hardware Wars and Other Film Farces", which also featured Closet Cases of the Nerd Kind (1982), Bambi Meets Godzilla (1969), and Porklips Now (1980) (also by Erie Fosselius). This version of the short (the one distributed by Pyramid Films) had one minor edit: the image of a nude model, which is seen briefly as various technical drawings are being shown on the screen during the "exciting pre-battle briefing" scene.
