The series focused on the staff of Research Centre Number Three, under the direction of Sir Michael Gerrard. Here work was undertaken for both the government (as part of the Ministry of Research) and firms unable to afford their own facilities, and also more specialised investigations for larger organisations. The second series centred more around R3's trouble-shooting department headed by Philip Boult, the Consultancy Service, whose brief was to solve problems beyond ordinary expertise.
None of the episodes from this series are currently known to exist in any form, though a trailer for one edition is believed to have been found on a tape in 2004 at the BBC's Windmill Road archive.
