Dr. Merton was known as "the poor man's doctor," for he was ever ready to serve those in illness who were unable to pay for medical attention. Thus his presence in poor quarters aroused no attention, and the fact that he was in reality the leader of a band of counterfeiters was not even suspected. Sergeant Casey received orders from the chief of police to hunt down the counterfeiters. For a long time they eluded his vigilance, but finally one of them was arrested while trying to pass some of "the bad money," and, subjected to a grilling "third degree," confessed. Plans were immediately made to raid the counterfeiters' den that night. The counterfeiters were surprised and captured with the exception of the leader, who escaped to the roof. The sergeant pursued, but when he gained the roof could see nothing of the fugitive. After a long search he suddenly realized that the man might have concealed himself in one of the houses. His own home was in a nearby house, only a few feet away, and...
