Richard Poshard provides the voice for the Wogglebug. Up until Cynthia Hanson approached him for the role he had never heard of the character or read the Oz books before. Cynthia Hanson believes he is so perfect for the voice not just because he is so talented but also because he is a lot like the Wogglebug in his own personality.
The character of the Wogglebug comes from the book "The Marvelous Land of Oz" by L. Frank Baum. The original sequel to the book of "The Wizard of Oz." But Cynthia Hanson felt the Wogglebug was always out of place there, and was robbed of a chance to be a hero and grow for the better as the series progressed. Hence the inspiration for this movie and the series to follow.
Cynthia Hanson added two original elements to the Wogglebug's tale of origins from its original source in L Frank Baum's book. That the Wogglebug is actually a human insect hybrid creation of Professor Nowitall which was why he knew what the Wogglebug was when the students didn't. Also that the word "woggle" means wisdom and love in a collective sense and implies it goes one way or the other depending on which is emphasized or neglected most.
Cynthia Hanson wrote the first draft of the screenplay and Richard Poshard assisted in the rewriting of it after Cynthia received feedback on the dialogue. It was Richard who came up with the idea of the Wogglebug telling his backstory in song.
L. Frank Baum may have been inspired for the Wogglebug's origins from a Lewis Carroll story called "Sylvie and Bruno" which featured another insect who was magnified on a screen and kept his new size. Though the character of Sylvie in this film is not named for that story, it is an incredible coincidence. A further incredible coincidence is that Richard Poshard, who provides the Wogglebug's voice, was known in college (and still known to his close personal friends) by the nickname Bruno.
King Ethano and Queen Lexia of Genoma are named after Richard Poshard's grandsons, Ethan and Alexander.
The elf named Christeph is named for Richard Poshard's grandsons, Christopher and Stephen.
The original ending Cynthia Hanson wrote wasn't dramatic enough. Then the ending Richard Poshard first thought of was too dramatic for Cynthia's vision. Then after she just explained to him why this was and what her vision really was for the film he redid the ending in a satisfactory way that balanced drama, magic, and triumph.
Antibo was originally a much scarier kind of villain to the point where Cynthia Hanson almost didn't want him to be in the film anymore. Then Richard Poshard rewrote the character to be a comical villain as much as a mean one most of the time who only turned evil towards the end.
Cynthia Hanson wrote the scene with Syvie and the Wogglebug making their way through the Mocking Trees based on her own struggles with her own naysayers about her dreams.
The Fairy Queen Mother of the Elements was originally without a name in Cynthia Hanson's first draft until Richard Poshard named her Elysia after his niece.
Rhonda Barber is the mother of Colt Barber in real life.
The three dignitaries in the Genoma castle who are haughty and stiff towards the Wogglebug are named Dr. Hulan, Lord Sprague, and Sir Reynolds after David Hulan, Gilbert Sprague, and Don Reynolds who are three Oz authors of the Oz fan community. Cynthia Hanson did this to satirize and mock the Oz fandom in how they perceive the Wogglebug these days and let all know she is just a Wogglebug fan and not an Oz fan.
10-year-old Nina Adamovic never knew of the Wogglebug or the Oz books before she auditioned for Sylvie. Though she is also a lover of insects just like the character is.
The characters of Sylvie, Tara, and Brian are all voiced by actual child voices.
Cynthia Hanson had originally wanted to cast 7-year-old child actress Robbie Lynne Hargrove for Sylvie's voice before Robbie's family learned that the movie was neither live-action nor a major movie production.
Cynthia Hanson had briefly considered trying to put the character of the Jorge Frogman in the film. But decided the Wogglebug and Sylvie should have one adventure together first and then Jorge Frogman should come in the next adventure they have together.
Richard Poshard wrote the song "I am Mr. H.M. Wogglebug T.E. based off of Beethoven's Ode to Joy (9th Symphony), and the Wogglebug's Report and Reprise at the end of the film based on the Modern Major General song from Pirates of Penzance.
In addition to the villain Antibo, Cynthia Hanson had considered using a giant spider or an ogre for the Wogglebug and Sylvie to overcome that Antibo threw in their path. But since the movie was running long decided to just use the Mocking Trees as Antibo's minions. The former two nemesis will appear in later movies though.
