Sleepy-Time Tom (1951) Online

Tom has been out late carousing with his chums. When he gets home, a slimmed-down Mammy won't take any excuses, and insists he stay awake; Jerry, overhearing, thus tries a number of schemes to get Tom to sleep. Not that he has to push hard; Tom tries drinking a giant pot of coffee, then keeping his eyes open with toothpicks and tape, and finally gives up and paints eyes on his lids. This fools Mammy, but not Jerry, who erects a series of Burma-Shave style signs leading Tom into the nice comfy bed, where Mammy discovers him and tosses him out just as his pals happen by for another night on the town.

I did see this once before on television but couldn't remember the name of it. Seeing it again, I now know what the cartoon was, and I can also say I loved Sleepy-Time Tom. It is a one-joke concept but it was a hilarious one anyway. The animation is simple but still very, very good, colourful and lively, and the music is wonderful. The visual gags and the minimal dialogue add to the hilarity, and while Mammy Two-Shoes's voice has visibly changed, the character is still effective. The story is simple, but well done, and the few voice-actors involved all do a stellar job. Jerry is still sweet and dastardly, and I kind of felt sorry for Tom, all he wanted to do was sleep(that's what happens if you stay out too late celebrating). Overall, I loved it, it just proves that a one-joke concept CAN work. 10/10 Bethany Cox

This is one of the cartoons with Mammy Two Shoes, the character who is never seen above the waist and who is a foil for Tom and/or Jerry in several shorts. The character became controversial for stereotypical appearance, speech and behavior and were rarely seen for quite a while. The voice has since been re-dubbed to eliminate the perceived insensitivity. Other than the minor fact that the shorts have been altered from their original form, the cartoons are not harmed by this and have been shown more often of late. This is a hilarious short where Mammy plays a small but vital role in the proceedings. The change is not materially significant to enjoying the cartoon, as the dialogue is not terribly different, just the pronunciation and speech patterns. Well worth tracking down and most recommended.

"Good Night, Ladies" sing the drunken cats in the middle of the night, returning home from an evening of revelry. Tom is more-than-ready to hit the sack. Unfortunately for him, the headless maid (we never her face or hear her name but she's referred to on IMDb as "Mammy") spots him and gets yelled at, big-time because "the mouse in the refrigerator" is taking the food and it's the cat's responsibility, "not mine," to take care of that situation.

By the way, the cartoons the other review mentioned, the one where Mammy's voice and grammar he said are altered, I don't believe are on this cartoon, which was part of the Spotlight Collection on DVD. She sounds "black" and the grammar isn't the best, so I am presuming I saw the cartoon as it was originally presented. That's why Whoopi Goldberg comes on with a disclaimer at the beginning of this DVD collection.

Half-asleep Tom makes it to the kitchen and would much rather go to sleep than worry about Jerry.

This one-gag cartoon (which many of them are) is Tom just about to clobber Jerry, the mouse giving him a pillow to fall asleep on, and then maid yelling at the cat, starting the whole process over again. This episode was slightly below par but not bad, either.

A hilarious Tom & Jerry cartoon where Tom returns home after a long night out with this friends, singing a catchy tune, buzzed and sleepy. But the poor cat needs to stay awake per the ever funny Mammy Two-Shoes to keep Jerry away from the fridge.

Loved the way Mammy Two-Shoes keep yelling "Thomas!" after she finds him asleep in various places, followed by some laugh-out-loud slapstick comedy. Tom's struggles to stay awake makes you want to curl up in bed for a nice nap as well!

Tom returns home late from a drunken night out with his pals, falling asleep whilst crawling in through the window. Mammy Two Shoes find him still there the next morning and threatens to throw the lazy cat out if he doesn't do his job and get rid of pesky mouse Jerry. On hearing this, Jerry does his utmost to ensure that Tom is caught napping again.

Sleepy-Time Tom's plot features the same wearisome location as many an earlier T&J caper—Mammy Two Shoes home—but avoids delivering too many yawns thanks to plenty of laughs. Sure, the cartoon is essentially a one-note joke, Tom repeatedly falling asleep just as he is about to nab Jerry, but that joke is a good 'un and offers quite a bit of mileage. My favourite gags involve Tom painting pupils onto his eyelids and trying to prop them open with toothpicks.

6.5/10, rounded up to 7 for IMDb.
