The movie's release coincided with the 50th anniversary of Yash Chopra's career in Bollywood.
Yash Chopra had intended to film parts of the title song "Jab Tak Hai Jaan" in the Swiss Alps, a favourite shooting location of his. However, after his death the Switzerland shoot was cancelled, as Aditya Chopra did not want to tamper with his father's vision.
The romantic scenes of the film were directed by Yash Chopra's son Aditya Chopra to give the romance a more contemporary feel.
Initially, the film shooting was supposed to get started in November 2011. However, it was postponed to January 2012 since Shah Rukh Khan decided to take a break with his family after the release of the films Случайный доступ (2011) and Дон. Главарь мафии 2 (2011).
This movie marks the return of Yash Chopra as a director after a gap of 8 years, his last film being Veer-Zaara.
Chopra completed the film just before he died on October 21, 2012, at the age of 80 as a result of dengue fever.
The climax of the film was initially planned by Yash Chopra to be shot in Kashmir. But instead the climax was shot in Ladakh, on the suggestion of Shah Rukh Khan, whose film "Dil Se.." was shot in the area many years earlier.
"Jab Tak Hai Jaan," the poem that Shah Rukh Khan recites during the teaser and that was added to the official soundtrack album of the movie, was written by Aditya Chopra, who, following his father's footsteps, directed romantic classics such as Непохищенная невеста (1995), Влюблённыe (2000), and Эту пару создал Бог (2008).
The first song of the film was completed in December 2011. In February 2012, A.R. Rahman told in an interview that he had completed three songs.
Shooting locations included Mumbai, London, and Bangkok on a 35-day shooting schedule that began on February 22, 2012.
First time Yash Chopra made a film, without Lata Mangeshkar singing even one song, otherwise usually all songs of Yash Chopra's film must be sung by Lata Mangeshkar and also sometimes Yash Chopra's wife, Pamela Chopra also sing for her husband's film.
Katrina Kaif was often spotted smoking cigarettes with Shah Rukh Khan on the sets of the film, which led to some public controversy.
During filming, there were rumours that the film was a remake of Yash Chopra's film Daag: A Poem of Love (1973). However, these rumours were refuted by Yash Raj Films.
Sharukh Khan and Katrina Kaif were paired together for the first time.
Many affair rumors began popping up during the making of the film of Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif being together, as they were seen smoking cigarettes together after shooting very frequently. However, Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif shot these down very quickly.
This was the last film (with the exception of Fan in 2016) in which Shahrukh Khan was top billed over lead actresses. From his next film Chennai Express, he would allow lead actresses to receive top billing.
Katrina Kaif worked with the three Khans consecutively in 2012-13 ("Ek Tha Tiger", "Jab Tak Hai Jaan" and "Dhoom 3"). She would again in 2017-18 ("Tiger Zinda Hai", "Thugs Of Hindostan" and "Zero").
In her streak of working with the Khans, Katrina had one thing common in the two films opposite every Khan: "Ek Tha Tiger" and "Tiger Zinda Hai" belong to same franchise; "Dhoom 3" and "Thugs Of Hindostan" are both directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya; and "Jab Tak Hai Jaan" and "Zero" both also stars Anushka Sharma.
Neetu Singh Kapoor who plays Katrina's estranged mother is shown settled with Rishi Kapoor . They both are married in actual life.
In an interview, Khan revealed details about his character: Samar is "angry, unforgiving, with loads of emotional baggage. I play him sweet when he needs to be. Actually, he is a lot like I am. Samar is a combination of angst, tenderness, anger, and yeah, he's pretty unforgiving."
Two weeks before the release, Ajay Devgn FFilms sent a notice to the Competition Commission of India accusing Yash Raj Films of monopolistic business practices; the notice contended that they used "their dominant position in the Bollywood film market" to secure many desirable single-screen theatres for their release.
Filming began on January 9, 2012.
This was Yash Chopra's 22nd and final movie.
After many years Neetu Singh Kapoor, was seen in a film.
Yash Chopra worked with Gulzar and A.R. Rahman for the first time.
Neetu Singh Kapoor is shown as the estranged mother of Kaif. While the film was being shot, Kaif used to date her son Ranbor Kapoor.
It marked the second collaboration between Khan and Sharma, as they previously featured in the film "Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi" (2008) also a Yash Raj film.

Chopra said the film was untitled at the time of announcement, similar to previous project 'Veer-Zaara' (which was named on the day of its submission to the Central Board of Film Certification).
The title was inspired by a similarly titled song from 'Sholay' (1975).
Aditya Chopra wanted his father, Yash Chopra, to make another film and approached him with the concept for 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan'.
Khan was the first choice for the role of Samar Anand, due to his long-standing relationship with the production house and the Chopra family.
As in his previous productions, Yash Chopra wanted to introduce a fresh pairing in the film and chose Katrina Kaif to star with Khan.
Anushka Sharma was cast in a supporting role to complete her three-film contract with Yash Raj Films, with whom she had worked on many previous projects.
Khan, who was working on other projects at that time, was unavailable for the shooting schedule so it was changed.
Though casting was quickly completed, shooting was delayed because the lead actors were busy with other projects.
Kaif's role was described as "the archetypal Yash Chopra seductress, an unattainable beauty".
Kaif worked hard to make her character believable with help from Khan, who had previous experience with the director.
The film was being shot under the working title Production 45.
Principal photography began on 9 January 2012 at Yash Raj Studios in Mumbai, where a significant part of was shot.
