This is a work in progress which started on 7 February 1978, at 11am. It is a silent 8mm film roll (duration: 3'20'') where a person is filmed in the situation he/she has chosen. No editing is done, no second take is allowed. As of June 2007, 2157 "Cinematons" have been shot, mostly artists and friends of author Gérard Courant. Total length is now nearing 150 hours screening.
The film is composed of segments created over a period of 36 years from 1978 until completion in 2006. Each segment is a silent 8mm film roll with a duration of 3 minutes and 25 seconds where a person is filmed in the situation he/she has chosen. No editing is done within a segment, no second take is allowed. The segments are than edited together (or removed for shortened versions of the film)
Upon completion 2865 segments (also known as "Cinematons") have been shot, mostly artists and friends of author Gérard Courant. Total length is now 191 hours screening time (191 hours / 7 days 23 hours / 11,460 minutes)
The completed 191 hour film has been shown only twice; once in Avignon, France in Novemeber 2009 and again in Redondo Beach, California in April of 2010. Prior to those completed showings, various segments of the film had been released many times over the past 30 years to film festivals around the world and in private screenings with the author.
