Having enjoyed 'Waking The Dead' I was keen to watch this spin off series featuring Tara Fitzgerald as forensic pathologist Dr. Eve Lockhart. Rather than dealing with old cases she is now helping the police to investigate current cases; in this episode she is called in when the walls of a flat are discovered to be literally covered with human remains. She and her team soon establish that two male victims were killed in an explosion; what caused it and why form the basis of the plot.

It is hard to judge a series on a single episode but so far it is rather average; I liked Tara Fitzgerald in the lead roll and Keith Allen was good as the police officer leading the case… however the rest of the team seemed far too cliché. The episode was also far too reliant of flashbacks to show us what happened every time something new was discovered; I think it would have been better if we were just told. The solution was also rather far fetched as we were expected to believe that somebody had just explained to the killer how to make a bomb without thinking how that knowledge might be used. I expect I'll continue to watch the series but I won't worry too much if I miss an episode.

As a huge Waking the dead fan I purposely did not watch this, until now. Waking the dead felt slick, fast paced, well directed and somehow sleek, first impressions of the spin off series are, slow, clunky and limited. Eve Lockhart was my favourite of Waking the Dead's morticians, her character was so interesting and deep. It just feels that there is something lacking, the opening credits are cheap looking, initially I can't decide if it's Eve, Johnson etc that are missing. The crime scene is a little unconvincing looking, it looks unconvincing. The team of characters also seem a little uninspiring, we have Oggy, refusing to take his medication, the moody Mike, and the fresh faced Rosa, the latter placed by the normally wonderful Wunmi Mosaku, but even she seems a little lost in the script. I really can see why Tara was given a series, she's a fantastic actress and a very interesting character, but this is a struggle, even Keith Allen's not having the best of times seemingly. By the end of the first episode we have hit every single cliché under the sun. Does the tsetse fly exist in the UK, not sure? The music was always well scored in Waking the dead, it helped build tension, add drama etc, it's so flat in this episode. A very average start.
