The Burgermeister hat that Brandon wears is a reference to Chris Smith's previous film The Hunger (2005) in which a fast-food chain known as Burgermeister was responsible for a worldwide wave of cannibalism.
Melissa Paulson's character was named after the zombie schoolgirls in Naoyuki Tomomatsu's Stacy (2001).
The shot of the zombie waking up in his coffin was taken from a scene that was originally supposed to appear in The Hunger (2005). The scene in question was cut during production and never filmed.
Steve mentions a girl at a place called Chez Brenda's that does a striptease to the theme from Mighty Mouse. This is all in reference to Shannen Doherty who played a character named Brenda on Beverly Hills 90210 (1990) and also mentioned having once stripped to the Mighty Mouse theme in Mallrats (1995).
In one draft of the script, Steve was supposed to leave Brandon's place and pull into a Burgermeister restaurant, which is the fictional fast-food chain from The Hunger (2005). Once there he would have been attacked by a zombie as he ordered his meal. The scene was cut to shorten the film as it was running too long at that point.
