The film was shot over a period of twelve days on-location in Iowa.
Ryan Fleming broke his left wrist a week before production, and performed the role of Hucklebilly wearing a removable cast hidden under the sleeve of his shirt, except for the skinny dipping scene, where he removed the cast for each take.
Adam Robitel, who plays Lester, Mayor Buckman's sheep lovin' son, is also the editor of the film.
While working one of the wading pool scenes, Director Tim Sullivan accidentally fell head first into the pool. In spite of the numerous camera equipment and operators around, it wasn't captured on camera.
Originally, this film was to have the name "2001 Maniacs: Beverly Hellbillys", but was changed when it was decided that it would be to expensive to film in Beverly Hills, California. If they went this route, the film wouldn't be too different, except prehaps the reality stars wouldn't be travelling.
Robert Englund was meant to reprise his role as Mayor Buckman, but was kept being re-scheduled due to lack of budget. The filmmakers decided to make the film using the budget they had, and cast Bill Moseley, all without Robert's knowledge.
Because it was shot outside along the Missouri River, mosquitoes became a serious issue, especially at dusk. Sending various Production Assistants out for insect repellent became nearly a nightly ritual.
Bill Moseley (Mayor Buckman) wrote and sings the end title song, "Lord Let Me Help You Decide Who To Kill".
In addition to the mosquitoes, the Sound Department had the additional challenge of both inbound and outbound airplanes, due to the proximity to Omaha's Eppley Airfield.
Jerry Schmit (Miles Dougal) is wearing a Mystery baseball cap. Mystery was the band in Detroit Rock City (1999), in which he played Elvis. Writer and Director Tim Sullivan was Executive Producer on Detroit Rock City (1999).
