This movie is the very first of the "Contemporary" trilogy made in China in the pre-revolutionary era. Like its successors, this movie also challenges the rigid Confucian teachings that dominated China for more than two thousand years, and like its successors, it is rather a topic too advanced for its time, and consequently, it did not perform well in the box office just like its successors, with the exception of the second one, Contemporary Youth made in 1941. This one concentrated on the gender discrimination against women.
