Buddy Boy (1999) Online

The story of a pious introvert whose religious conviction begins to crumble under the weight of a cruel and strange existence, Buddy Boy is a study of faith, obsession, alienation and madness. The film's title character, Francis, lives with his invalid, abusive mother in a dingy tenement apartment, and has suffered a life of unrelenting misfortune and brutality. Over time, he has withdrawn from the world and into himself, silently observing others rather than interacting with them. His only solace has been his Catholicism, but he has begun to question his faith in a loving God who could countenance so much evil and pain. When he discovers he can see into the apartment of a beautiful, mysterious woman from his own back stairs, Francis cannot stop watching her, even after he meets her and they become romantically involved. Unable or unwilling to believe that she could actually love him, he becomes ever more obsessive in his voyeurism. And it is what Francis sees - or thinks he sees - ...

For those who can make the necessary suspension of disbelief and contend with the depressingly dark ugliness of this drama, "Buddy Boy" will prove to be a captivating and disturbing look at the troubled life of a homely, introverted, socially inept, stammering young man who dutifully tends to a disabled, alcoholic, and abusive mother while window peeping at a beautiful neighbor. Somewhere between quirky and surreal, "Buddy Boy" is a compelling character study which waxes doggedly toward a somewhat anticlimactic conclusion. Not for everyone, this flick is most likely to be appreciated by those who are into quirky dramas for quirkinesses sake.

This disturbing and hilarious film achieves a delicate balance of the macabre and the absurd. At times it approaches satire, but its ultimate dramatic intensity belies a more serious study of faith and alienation. The performances of Aidan Gillen, as Francis, the lonely introvert voyeur, and Susan Tyrrell, his abusive mother, are exceptional. The production design and cinematography together create a strange and haunting world. One particularly interesting element is the use of sound to convey the protagonist's changing psychological perspective. Overall, this film has the unusual characteristic of staying with you long after you've seen it. I would highly recommend it.

A dark and disturbing film about Francis (Aiden Giillen), who lives a lonely introverted holy life with his bed-ridden stepmother Sal. But all is not what it seems, and the twisting plot of this story manages to make you feel very uneasy. Most of the time you find yourself on the edge of your seat trying to map out the film, but the unexpected twists and turns and the addition of odd and frightening sub plots make this film addictive from the first minute. This is a film that will stay with you for a long time after you have watched it. It is quite frankly terrifying and spooky at times, when Francis' neighbour, a strict self-proclaimed vegan, who he grows to love, is not all she seems when she is seen hacking away and eating raw meat, which is concerningly similar to a piece of human flesh. The film leads to an underlying and alarming suspicion of cannibalism, violence and murder. At the same time, freaky sub plots emerge and a startling shock appears when Francis' stepmother Sal becomes involved with a plumber, and after an incident emerges, Sal is not all she appears to be. The further involvement of another curious subplot about an abducted girl who Francis keeps seeing, adds even more suspense. The Plot thickens when you're left with the feeling that Francis may be imagining things, but is he? I loved this film and the ending is a brilliant and extremely scary, and leaves you wondering. I found myself asking everyone I knew if they had seen it just to hear their theory's about what was going on. Without a doubt a must see film.

I really enjoyed the film. I loved the repetition of shots and the plot twists. At first the film looked like it was going to be somewhat normal but then it turned into a darker, more twisted view of human nature. I felt that I was guessing what was going to happen next and had theories in mind before the ending came. And what an ending it was! I have a feeling I'm going to have to watch it again at least once more before I can come up with any solid theory. I give it an 8-9 out of 10.

A bumpy story, but this is a good thing. I found myself saying, "What the....?" several times. After a slow start, the plot adds new ingredients which steer us into the muddy waters of a man's wild delusions and his equally bizarre reality. The lines blur without warning and the film securely carries us out of the normal boundaries and trappings of life. Well acted and written while the directing lacked nothing. To see Emmanuelle Seigner again (Ninth Gate) was a pleasant surprise. I'd probably need to see this one again. I liked it. 7 of 10

1st watched 4/5/2007 - 7 out of 10(Dir-Mark Hanlon): Disturbing and fascinating story of a recluse who does nothing except take care of his ailing step mother until he meets his next door neighbor who he happens to be peeping at thru a hole in his basement on a daily basis. The peeping continues despite the fact that she falls in love with him and they spend many evenings together. She openly confesses to being a vegan, but Francis(the recluse) starts seeing things thru his peep hole that makes him think otherwise. Francis's life has been mixed up for awhile. His real mom&dad are dead -- his step mom is crazy & crippled, he lives a mundane life where he goes to work on the same bus everyday and doesn't really interact with people and knows very little about women until his next door neighbor comes along and disrupts his simple boring life. There is also a religious aspect to his life that does nothing but confuse him and gives him somewhere to confess his sins, but does nothing to help him in real life. Despite this, everything is going along OK until his step mom accidentally kills his boyfriend and Francis suspects his neighbor is killing men in her apartment and having a little snacky-poo from the remains(which is technically not being a vegan). OK, now that I've said this much, I still hope you will see this well done independent movie. It's compelling, creepy and a nice study on human existence for a few mixed up people.

The stutterer Francis (Aidan Gillen) is a lonely religious man that works processing photos and lives with his abusive stepmother Sal (Susan Tyrrell) that is invalid in a gloomy apartment. Francis has a dreadful solitary life and he works, takes care of Sal and goes to the Catholic Church and his relief is his faith in God. Francis is also a voyeur and spends his nights watching a beautiful neighbor in another building through a hole on the wall from the back stairs of his building and masturbating later.

One day, Francis stumbles with the woman that is being robbed by a thief on the street and he helps her. She introduces herself as Gloria (Emmanuelle Seigner) and invites him to have dinner with her. Gloria explains that she is vegan and soon they have a love affair and Francis loses his virginity with Gloria that loves him. But Francis becomes obsessed to watch Gloria and he believes that she has other men and is cannibal, eating the flesh of her lovers. The schizophrenic behavior of the delusional Francis makes him see weird things in Gloria's apartment.

"Buddy Boy" is a bleak tale of schizophrenia, with a dark story of a religious man that becomes insane and delusional. The director and writer Mark Hanlon makes a weird independent movie following the style of David Lynch and makes a tribute to "The Tenant", "Rear Window" and "Blue Velvet". It is unbelievable that "Buddy Boy" is the only work of this promising director. Aidan Gillen, Susan Tyrrell, Emmanuelle Seigner and Mark Boone Junior have exceptional performances. Emmanuelle Seigner is still in the top of her beauty and is difficult to find a reasonable reason for her love for the weird Francis. The colors in this movie are very dark, especially in the dingy apartment where Francis and Sal live. My vote is seven.

This film offers such a vivid depiction of mental illness that I found myself slightly disturbed after I had done watching it (I'm OK now, though!!) It will appeal to those who are fans of unsettling psychological horror that explores one person's mental state. Other films that I'm sure this one carries the influence of, include: "The Driller Killer", "Psycho", "Bad Boy Bubby"...

I'm no psychiatrist, but it struck me how it might be possible to get so wrapped up in one person, that you begin projecting your issues onto them once they've let you down; because up until then they'd been the only reliable, stable figure in your life. Throw in religious crises, which have the ability to make you even more uncertain, and you've got the recipe for one seriously messed-up individual. There is imagery contained within to turn your stomach and make your head spin. Take a chance on "Buddy Boy" if you're in the mood for a walk on the wild side; I just hope you come back unscathed... !

Buddy Boy is an amazingly twisted and brilliantly written piece. Hanlon is obviously a man possessing exceptional skill and an enviable creative mind. The film requires that its audience possess the intelligence and acumen in order to appreciate its complicated, dark beauty. One can only hope that he continues to provide the movie-going community with such wonderfully challenging material.

Buddy Boy is a psychological thriller on the same scale of Roman Polanski movies. While seeing Buddy Boy it immediately reminded me of a particular Polanski movie, The Tenant. Both stories deal with men looking abroad to the windows of others and noticing bizarre happenings. Thus causes the men to slowly go insane and therefore indulge themselves within their own insanity.

The story deals with a stuttering young man who is very reclusive and lives with his stepmother. He spends most of the time locked in his room. A perverse pass time of his is to look inside the apartment of a beautiful woman, played by Polanski’s wife, Emmanuelle Seigner. He falls in love with the woman’s image without knowing her. As the story develops they eventually meet and become friends. The young man continues to spy on the woman due to his lack of trust in her. As he peeps into the woman’s apartment, he begins to notice that she cooks human flesh and eats it raw. He goes over the woman’s apartment, only to discover that she is eating vegetables, I forgot to mention the woman is a vegetarian. The young man begins to think God hates him for making him see terrible things. Apparently the only time he sees the acts of cannibalism is when he is at his Peeping Tom area. This is the beginning of one man’s decent into madness.

I expected to see a particular type of stylish psychological film, instead I witnessed something more disturbing than what I usually see. Nevertheless it was an interesting movie. The style is ugly, its not elegant it’s simply ugly. So far I have not learned to like this particular style, I prefer something more elegant, meaning I dislike movies that take place in the rural areas of a metropolitan city. Despite the settings I thought the film was decent. It’s definitely a change of pace horror film instead of watching the typical teenage slasher Hollywood flicks. Which I don’t see but I’m sure they are terrible. Buddy Boy is a film that allows you to have your own conclusion, it doesn’t give you the ending, you create it yourself by what you saw from the flick.

Dark and quirky film about a real introvert that stays home to take care of his mother. He's extremely lonely and frustrated by his life and spends his time spying on his attractive neighbor. Sounds like a creepy film and it is but Susan Tyrrell who plays his mother is just terrific. Her performance elevates this film from a throw away to a real curio! Tyrrell has made a career out of playing these incredibly offbeat roles and no one does it better. One of the frustrating things about the story is when Emmanuelle Seigner's character is somehow attracted to Aiden Gillen and he doesn't seem to appreciate it. Then his paranoia starts to take over and he thinks she's a cannibal. Film has one of those ambiguous endings and its up to each viewers taste as to how you'll react to this. But Tyrrell is a standout. Former child actress Linda Manz (Days of Heaven, The Wanderers) appears in the film as well.

I discovered this as i was hunting for Aidan Gillen films, and saw it had decent reviews. I wont go into the plot, as others have already. OK so this is a 'thinky' psychological film, and it reminded me a lot of the film 'The Machinist' (I'd recommend that if you liked this), but without the stylish effects. I thought Gillen would be too 'pretty' to pull off the role of a social misfit, but his acting is brilliant throughout, and his looks even help us to like the character more. His character is good at heart but completely sheltered. The female character is acted very naturally, though there is a certain ambiguity to her. The invalid mother is also well acted, initially I thought she was pretty light-hearted (if a little eccentric) but as the film progresses we see she has several 'other sides' to her personality.

The film has several themes running through it, which to me, were: the growth of the main character's confidence and opinions(which develops possibly into madness), his changing views on religion, and the relationship with his mother, and of course the mystery of what the female neighbour is up to. There was also a lot of emphasis on some kidnapped little girl, but I wasn't quite sure how this fitted in with the story.

For me, one of the best bits in the film is when Francis challenges gloria about her vegan-ism, and to me it was a parallel with religion. He was pretty devout at the start of the film, and defends that Jesus died for us even though we don't all love him. Yet he shouts at Gloria 'you would rather starve to death than eat a hamburger? You would die for a cow that's already dead?' Towards the end of the film, Francis is more outspoken, and is finally breaking free from the world his mother forces him to remain in, but his obsession with Gloria's eating habits start to rule his life. The whole thing is very ambiguous, and we don't know if it is true or he is just imagining it, and no there is no conclusion at the end! which keeps us guessing.

In terms of style, its not the most eye-pleasing film. As i've said it is similar to The Machinist in it's dreary depiction of life and the surreal, repetitive shots used. The music is fairly un-noticeable throughout the film apart from the blasts of rock music at Francis' workplace, which helps to break up the monotony of the sets used, as its mostly set in Francis or Glorias apartments. the music at the opening credits is very creepy and Silent Hill-ish! Overall I'd say you'll enjoy this if you like psychological films you have to think about. There's little action, and basically no horror, but an interesting watch. My only complaint is that the film is way too long, pretty slow paced and tends to drag on too much in the first half. But give it a go!

I know there are not many votes on this film but if there were it certainly would have a higher rating then a 6.0. The acting is excellent all the way around, the numerous plot twists and turns keep the viewer enthralled from beginning to end, and it leaves one with many questions to ponder afterward.

As Francis' (Aidan Gillen) emotions begin to unravel it will blow your mind into the unavailing that comes about in the end. If you are a simple minded individual that enjoy movies for the loud explosions and eye candy this one may not be for you. This is in a class of maybe about a dozen movies that I couldn't get out of my head for days after viewing (Requiem for a Dream, Mysterious Skin, There Will Be Blood, American History X, The Machinist, The Wrestler, The Shawshank Redemption, Road to Perdition, The Green Mile, The Prestige, Unbreakable, Revolutionary Road, Amores Perros, Happiness) Also Emmanuelle Sieigner may have the sexiest voice/accent that I have ever heard. She's a real babe in this one.

Highly Recommended: 9.5/10

Read this ONLY if you've seen the movie. My attempt at deconstructing it follows.

You won't find many movies as dark, ugly, and depressing as "Buddy Boy." This is a prime example of an excellent film that makes you feel very uncomfortable. That it was widely panned upon it's microscopic release only reinforces my belief that it was simply too strong for most reviewers.

Don't try to make this movie more complicated than it is. My take on it is that Francis is obviously a very sick, unhappy guy who tries frantically to make some sense out of a very twisted life that he feels trapped in. When he's home, he avoids interaction with his "mother" --- really his brother, who's been driven insane by the murder of his mother by his father (not 100% sure on this, but something really f***** up on that scale). He thinks he finds an island of sanity in a dream girl named Gloria, but as the movie progresses it's clear that Francis too is growing ever more delusional and psychotic. He projects the "hypocrisy" of the religion he's been force fed his whole life onto Gloria, an avowed vegan whom Francis hallucinates is really a sadistic cannibal. My take on the ending is that Gloria has never really existed and he may have hallucinated her, her apartment, and everything surrounding his beautiful "escape hatch." His TRUE defense mechanism has been total nihilism, and in the end, it's all he has. Nothingness.

My take on it anyway.... It is very similar to Polanski's The Tenant not only in the paranoid delusions of the protagonist put also in how Francis "watches" his own demise later in the film at Gloria's paganistic dinner party.

This film really engulfs you and sinks you into a nightmare world. Proceed at your own risk!

This is an uncomfortable movie to watch. Not because of any of it's artistic qualities, but because of the viewer's immersion into a greasy, sickly environment that becomes real enough to smell. Aidan Gillen and Susan Tyrrell are both great. I'm wondering why I haven't seen him in big budget films unless it's because he does remind one of Edward Burns (not a bad thing). I very rarely enjoy what might be considered a horror film because the characters often do things that are so stupid that I am often relieved when they finally meet their ultimate demise. Not so here. In addition to the acting, it is well directed, written, and filmed. As my summary line hints, this seemed to be bits of other movies combined pretty gracefully, and is well worth seeing.

I'd originally watched BUDDY BOY about three years ago but never reviewed it for some reason. I remembered how I felt about it but wanted to revisit again before I made any comments in on it.

The storyline involves around Francis-a 'nice' but a bit slow and socially-retarded individual who has no life other than working at a photo-development shop and taking care of his alcoholic, piece of sh!t stepmother. A chance encounter with a sexy neighbor (who Francis has been spying on) works out in his favor when said neighbor seems to recognize his decent qualities despite his awkwardness-and goes so far as to bone the poor sap. They begin a 'relationship' of sorts-but as Francis becomes more obsessed with sexy-neighbor and his paranoia gets the best of him-things start spiraling downward rapidly...

Overall-BUDDY BOY is a decent film that touches on subjects concerning obsession, paranoia, mental break-down, reality vs. fantasy, etc...in other words-all things that make for a laugh-a-minute joyride. But seriously- there are some heady subjects that are touched on and handled well. I guess my only gripes are that the film feels like a hundred other films that I've seen that deal with the same basic subject-matter. What BUDDY BOY is at it's heart-is basically REAR WINDOW with elements of every other paranoia-themed film out there. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing-as this one stands up well on it's own-I just don't feel that I'm seeing anything new or original. Also- although the pace is decent in terms of trying to build suspense and keep the viewer guessing-it still felt a little over-long to me. I think a bit of trimming in the editing room could have made it a bit more streamlined. The semi-ambiguous but predictable ending felt rehashed as well. If it sounds like I'm bagging on this one-I'm really not. It's well- acted, well-shot, and a solid film overall...I just didn't leave the film feeling like I saw anything fresh or extremely noteworthy...7/10

Buddy Boy is strange film to get a hold of. It has very stylised production design and cinematography, and is quite slow to start but once it gets going, it becomes a very unique film. Francis is the main character. An introverted guy with a stutter who goes to a catholic church, works in a photo developers and lives with an old woman called Sal. Towards the beginning of the film, it builds up our information about the character using cinematic technique, rather than dialogue. The main crux of the film is formed when he meets a woman, Gloria and gets involved in a relationship with her. The film continues with a subplot about a missing child and a man who came in to fix a leaky pipe that keeps coming back and hanging out with Sal. The relationship between Francis and Gloria being the main plot, it takes a darker twist and we get lots of religious imagery, talk of God, hypocrisy and vegans. This is comes together to make quite an intriguing film, that whilst it doesn't quite seem to all gel together, is a worthy effort, and results in a better than average film.

Warning, this has a few spoilers to do with the plot.

It was about eleven o'clock at night, and me and my parents were watching T.V, when Buddy Boy came on. I was trying to evade being sent to bed, so feigned interest for the rather boring first ten to fifteen minutes, showing the routine of the main characters life. However, it begins to get rather interesting after that, it's a film where you sit on the edge of your seat, riveted watching the screen, just waiting for Frances to a.Kill someone, b.Go mad, or c.Shout a lot. Aidan Gillen is incredibly good as the shy, reclusive Frances. There are a few plot holes in the story, like how many parties Frances's girlfriend appears to have. The ending to this film is a classic, and the whole movie has a dark, spooky atmosphere, and certainly leaves you with a lot to think about. I still don't understand all that business with that little girl he sees in the photograph. What's all that about?

Having just finished seeing this film I came to the message boards for answers, and only found others seeking the same thing. A vivid hallucinatory dream can feel like reality, with the imagery powerful, but undecipherable even to the dreamer.

I conclude that this film was of this genre, a nightmare made into a public event, a film to be seen by all who can take it. Given the genre, given that it is valuable for someone to be into someone else's nightmare rather than their own, it is an admirable work of art. We go wrong when we ask for real world logic, where the bodies of large dead men do not disappear, and may not be taken away piece by piece on a bus. Dreams follow no such logic. They are there to allow a reconfiguration of reality into some kind of a resolution.

The central riveting element for me was Francis' love affair with Gloria. She was luscious, kind, accepting, admiring and always there for him. (If that's not a clue that this is a dream fantasy, then what is?) His sexual pleasure was best when at a distance, through a telescope, only to be made flesh onto flesh with fear and reluctance on his part.

There is a great word "verisimilitude" that describes the degree that a dramatic presentation approximates reality. It is usually considered a necessity, even though each work is allowed a degree of poetic license to vary from this for the purposes of dramatic effect.

"Buddy Boy," gets zero on the verisimilitude scale of actual life, as Francis is right not to believe that a girl like Gloria could actually love him. But this scale of realism has a different set of rules in nightmare films such as this. The only reality that must be sustained is emotional engagement, a working out of some unknown outside existence through the flashes of imagery that both intrude upon and advance the dream work.

Francis, whoever he is when awake, is a suffering human being forsaken by God, family and the world around him. He also has come to believe that Jesus, whom he says gave his life for love of humanity, actually despises him. It is a world of kidnapped children whom he can not save, and vegans who kill and eat human beings.

And yet, in the midst of all of this horror, he found someone to love him. No wonder he is reluctant to wake up.

Loved it. Sensitive depiction of schizophrenia. And, of course, a multitude of other subjects that keep us wondering about the existence of God and the role of religion. Superb acting by all. Susan Tyrrell is simply amazing as Sal, and so is Aidan Gillen, as Francis, the protagonist, who cannot differentiate between what is real and what is not, and his eventual acceptance of that. Emmanuelle Seigner (who is married to Roman Polanski) is also terrific, with a subdued performance. Beautiful sets and lighting. Lush scenes of healthy food will make you hungry, and contrast beautifully with visions of cannibalism. We are forced to face our beliefs in God, and whether you believe in God or not, what we see is a depiction of a God that is cruel and selfish. What else could it be? Brilliant.

Writer/director Mark Hanlon's first film is a quirky little that that is unpredictable.

Francis (Aidan Gillen) works in a photo-mart during the day and takes care of his semi-invalid mother at night. Is it really his mother? I'm not so sure.

He finds a peephole to spy on Gloria (Emmanuelle Seigner) and his masturbatory acts increase. Soon, he has many more sins to confess as Gloria somehow falls in love with him.

Now, Gloria is supposedly a vegan, but she has this nasty secret that Francis finds out about, but can't prove.

But, there is more strange things going on as a missing girl keeps popping up, and a dead body even ends up in Francis' apartment.

What is real? What is imagined? You'll definitely have to decide that for yourself.

A few years ago, Christmas of 2004 to be exact I was sitting down late at night channel surfing when I stopped on IFC to see that they were having some sort of movie marathon and this movie(Buddy Boy) was just beginning so I figured "Why not? There is nothing else on unless I want to watch A Christmas Story for the 32nd time."

So as the movie flows through the opening credits, I am intrigued by the dark atmosphere it is already presenting so I put the remote down and continue to watch. About 20 minutes into the film I am engrossed in the increasingly gloomy mood about the film and the emotionally unstable characters it is presenting to me. Our main character Francis lives with his neglectful couch potato of a mother in an old dingy apartment where he isolates himself from any socialization and spends much time spying on the adjacent apartment through a hole in the wall in the back of his apartment. Throughout these viewings he notices an attractive female and becomes engrossed into continuously watching her until one day by chance they run into each other on the street where she introduces herself as Gloria and her and Francis begin their relationship and this begins the psychological roller coaster that is Buddy Boy.

Throughout the film Francis becomes increasingly frustrated with his mother and himself while at the same time builds a closer relationship with Gloria and out of increased interest continues to spy on her through the peephole in his apartment and witnesses a series of disturbing events within her apartment that makes the viewer question the validity of the events or Francis' very own sanity. The excellent thing about this film it is a psychological thriller and it does its job very well continuously making the viewer wonder if what is going on in the screen is either actually happening or our main character is losing his mentality. The film keeps delving deeper into the psychological mess that is Francis and the bizarre events he views in Gloria's apartment which eventually builds up to the final confrontation that has an ending that may very well drive the viewer themselves insane.

Overall the movie has a very interesting story that succeeds with superb acting and overall presentation. I highly recommend it to anybody in the mood for an original suspense story or just plainly a good movie.

Here we go again! Another pathetic loser who doesn't have looks, personality, money or charm, meets and beds a beautiful, erotic, exotic, mysterious woman. Why this ingénue is attracted to this spoog when she is so high up the food chain from him(literally). Eventually we find out she's a cannibal. With "Habit" the clues came gradually that the ingénue wasn't right, here they distract with like six different more interesting stories,(his mothers love interest, missing child, workplace etc etc)who cares about this doofus and his flat chested girl.

The movie started off with the hero furiously masturbating. i was thinking that might not bad idea when the movies over. However after that rape scene, I won't be doing that for a while.

***MAJOR SPOILER*** Depressing film set in an anonymous Canadian, I think, city about a recluse who's life is quickly falling apart together with his sick and alcoholic step-mother.

Francis, Aidan Gillem, find himself stuck taking care of his infirmed step-mom Sal, Susan Tyrell, who's becoming-in constantly demanding his complete attention-more then he can handle. There's also Sal's live in lover Vic, Mark Boone Jr, the handyman who made himself at home by using the lame excuse of fixing the bathtub which is now going on for some six weeks. It was for a while that Francis' deep religious convictions, instilled in him by Sal, kept him from going completely insane in the world of suffering and depression he finds himself in. Now with everything quickly falling apart Francis turns against his Catholic upbringing, as well as belief in God, feeling that its, in putting him in the mess that he finds himself in, the reason for all his problems.

While not on his job at the local photo lab Francis spends his free time spying on his next-door neighbor Gloria, Emmanuelle Seigner, whom he's got, in her walking around her apartment in her underclothes, the hots for. It's later when Francis saves Gloria from being mugged that she, despite of his extreme shyness towards her, becomes fascinated as well as falls madly in love with him! Francis' relationship with Gloria, which at first is strictly platonic, starts to get under his step-mother Sal's skin. Always putting Francis on a guilt trip in him living in sin, even though both him and Gloria are single, is very hypocritical on her part to Francis. Sal is doing just that with her slobbery boyfriend Vic as well as getting drunk every day which is a bigger sin then what her step-son Francis is doing. Especially when drinking booze is, in the sorry condition that Sal's in, like slowly committing suicide which is a mortal sin in the Catholic Religion.

It's later, while still spying on her, when Francis discovers or thinks he does that Gloria-a life long vegan- who told him she refrains from eating animal products eating raw meat that he completely freaks out and goes off the deep end. This leads to him also openly revolting against Sal that leads to her and Vic, who's completely oblivious to whats going on, to come to blows with him. During the knock down and drag out fight with Sal Vic ends up dead beaten to a pulp with Sal's, where she obviously keeps most of the booze she's drinking, wooden leg!

***MAJOR MAJOR SPOILERS*** Francis now ready for a straight-jacket and padded cell starts to find out, or does he, that Gloria is part of a cannibalistic cult that she invites over to her apartment to feast on human flesh! The movie is so ambiguous about Gloria's lifestyle and eating habits that your not quite sure if she's a cannibal or not but the by now deranged Francis is more then positive that she is! That's until he confronts Gloria alone in her apartment and finally finds out the truth which is purposely kept from those of us, by now totally confused to what's going on, watching the film!

The movie "Buddy Boy" is a lot like that all time "Bad Movie" classic "Shrike of the Mulitated" but in its trying to be serious nowhere, intentionally or not, as funny. As hard as actor Adian Gillen tried he just wasn't that convincing as the nerdy and speech defected, by having a hard time stuttering, wallflower that he tried to concave to the audience. It's that very reason that should have been the most unconvincing part in the film in Gloria-a real hot number-falling heads over heels for Francis who wasn't that bad looking at all, in fact you can even say he was handsome, which wasn't that unconvincing at all!
