First off, let me address some of the issues raised by people lower down in thos thread. Not once does this try to demoise white people... at all. Its almost a laughable statement. There is one instance where race is concerned towards the end of the episode and it is literally banter between two friends.

Now as for this episode and what it offers. The first two episodes quite clearly set the benchmark high for this season and got the ball rolling on what is so far a very interesting plot with some intriguing elements of dementia/memory loss utilised throughout.

Compared with the first two, yes this wasn't as fast paced in terms of delivering major story/plot points to carry the plot along. But it did however contain some very interesting moments that will no doubt play a major role in story development at some point.

  • What did Wayne leave out of his reports?
  • What is the link between the photo album and the murder?
  • And what is in the bag that the native american trash guy picks up? A body or a rifle for retaliation?

The two main characters have just met once again in the 90's story line. I feel as the the plateau is over and this season will up the stakes every episode from here on out.

Like if you agree.

This episode is yet another strong follow up to the ever increasingly fantastic third season. With this episode we gain both more insight on the case as it played out over the 20 years, as well as incredibly more questions about who the true suspect/POI the audience should be focusing on is. The themes of racial bias and discrimination become increasingly more evident, yet not in an overbearing way that encroaches on the actual story and narrative. Not as atmospherically compelling as the first two episodes, yet it still maintains that cold sense of mystery accompanied with the Ozarks. Overall another fantastic continuation on this beautifully complex narrative.

This show has everything you could ever want out of a crime thriller while combining both brilliant character creation and story telling. So far, this season has contained all the elements that made True Detective season 1 the master piece it was. This season comes back to the roots of what made the show and first season great, while continuinf to be unlike any other show on television. Each episode is carefully telling a story and painting a picture that almost requires you to actively take part in resolving the mystery yourself in order to fully appreciate the story and it's characters. Since the beginning, this show has been one of my all time favorites and just hope this is what we can continue to expect the rest of this season and going forward after clearly getting away from that in Season 2. Very excited about watching this season play out!

So, we have arrived at episode 3 of the new Season and we're just now leaving many things open and creating some very interesting storylines that will hopefully have satisfying conclusions. The ending scene promises (hopefully) a bit more action and tension for the following episodes, if you remember, True Detective S1 started getting big in E4&5, so we're definitely in for a treat. Most importantly we're shown the influence that the case has, and had on Hays as he still struggles to remember and look back at it when he's 70 years old.

Mahershala Ali delivers a fantastic performance once again in all three life spans. The cinematography is gorgeously grey and stylish, the supporting characters work very well in the context of the show and we're now unravelling all the different mysteries of the case.

Looking forward to next week!

If you're thinking about what to make of this episode (some would argue it's dull) just remember the scene in wal-mart and the acting masterclass from Mahershala Ali there, all this episode does is introduce you to the 90's storyline and what a great job it did. Can't wait for the next episode 9.2/10

Obviously some viewers don't get the nuances involved in this series . Yes it can , at times , be slow and even slightly repetitive in places but it is beautifully written and great to see Stephen Dorf back on our screens in a decent role . His partner , however , is the scene stealer so far but great feeling and interaction between the two leads . I suggest the viewer who gave this 1/10 finds something to watch , more to his or her taste , like The Dukes of Hazard

Can't beleive I'm saying this, but this is getting even slower. Each episode has less and less actual stuff happening. It's ep. 3 already and the story didn't move at all. I like the idea of exploring the characters, yet Wayne Hays is getting almost 90% of creen time in 3 separate time lines, while Roland West kind of loses the importance he didn't even have in the first place. Also, while the make up is amazing, Stephen Dorff's looks are kind of weird (he looks younger in his older scenes and vice versa).

I'm already starting to lose interest, mostly because it's hard for me to identify with Ali's character and due to crawling pacing. The detectives have less chemistry than Marty and Rust, and they are less grounded and beleiveable overall. Their interactions are ok, but they just never seem to care about each other at all. They are always distant from each other.

The fact that a big chunk of each episode is close ups of Ali's face trying to deal with the horrors of his past kind of becomes annoying. This is a very cheap strategy of building up to nothing. Like "wait till you find out, oh that was so bad his whole life was shattered because of this one particular case, it will be so intense, just wait till you see". And then nothing happens, nothing at all.

It really held my attention up until now. And while I love getting back to S1 and enjoying every shot and every dialogue of it, I'm not even sure I will be around to witness S3 finale.

So each show is just an hour of people mumbling to each other and nothing else. Will have to stop watching after this episode, also the main actor is really hard to understand, I have to have the subtitles on just to understand him.

Absolutely excruciating. Loved the first two seasons. Loved the first two episodes of this season. But THIS. This was dull beyond dull.

Especially when he's in the current timeline and he's older, I just can't understand that guy. Through three episodes now, same thing. Is this in the cam? I wonder if it's too late for them to fix this in the episodes towards the end.

True Detective

Pizzolatto's crime drama clearly leans on offering an engaging drama rather than a gripping case. It has always been a bit spiritual than it has to be technical. And this is what makes the series stand out among various such true story crime investigations. Another thing that the makers works on majorly, are its layered dialogues and mature conversations, since there is often very little development on the case in each step- in order to convey the practicality and test the patience of the viewers as the characters did- the writers gets to stretch the muscles on the bonding of the characters. And deriving various equations between them, this character driven series speaks more on the existence of a being and the nature of oneself in the society.

The series has few signature scenes like a deep philosophical conversation in a car, recording the testimony and an edgy love track. It takes real cases and creates a non-linear cinematic structure and more than often in order to do so, the detailing that goes behind setting up these characters in that world gives it a more attractive look. From creating the era that the tale revolves around to setting up the art design or set accordingly, the narration too gets more referential of the pop-culture or political controversy that was buzzed around that period which immensely helps the writers to jump on the train for a smooth flow.

Unlike any other juicy criminal case, it barely directs its guns towards the who-done-it case, if anything its uncertainty and vagueness, makes you go off track from the case and easily dive on the ideologies of the characters. This slow pill drama is the most meticulous a crime genre has ever ever been, a home run from Pizzolatto's point of view, since his vision, of projecting the real behind the stage sweat and blood inducing work that goes by in a case, is jaggedly on mark.

Season 03

Coming back to their original theme, this season starts the clock from zero, and offers a familiar cat and mouse chase, where the investigation is rudimentary and the development is slow paced as usual, but what makes you look twice for it, is Ali's breathtaking performance.

The Big Never

Plummeting down the quality with yes better storyline, but chalky screenplay, the episode follows practically a big nothing sign, that attempts to create a family drama but has empty threats, and a thorough investigation procedure but is barely gripping.

The Wal-Mart scene was good and this show continues to drop hints and red herrings at the same time, but I also feel like this kind of writing gets tiring at a point. Clearly ignoring or leaving certain words out so people don't know what exactly happened with this case or the relationship can only last for so long. It doesn't create more suspense it just frustrates the viewer.
