Rafts of sargassum seaweed, kilometers wide, have been invading the Caribbean since 2011. Residents near beaches are exposed to a pernicious danger, scientists say, from fumes emitted by the decaying algae. The odor drives tourists away and the tourism economy is collapsing. Pollution and climate change seem to be the cause for the algae cyclic invasions. An elderly woman, Virginie Mark, struggles with her health, finances and psychology. Since 2011, the algae has never been removed in front of her house, which once looked like a paradise.
