The name "mara" might come from a creature in Scandinavian folklore. When people had nightmares they said that they had been ridden by the mara (the Norwegian word for nightmare is "mareritt") who took the shape of a woman.

In greek culture the name is "mora" and she also is an elderly woman who visits people while they sleep and has much to do with sleep paralysis. there are thousands of reports about "it" everywhere and the legend goes on and on.

In Buddhism, Mara is the name of a demon that tries to sway Prince Siddhartha (Gautama Buddha) from the path of enlightenment by sending (some say they went of their own will) his daughters to seduce him. (They failed.)

So the story is not an original one ,, watched a couple of movies about that that "ghoul" or "djin" that comes to you while you're paralyzed in sleep .. but to be fair ,, there was actually more than a couple of creepy seat jumping moments ... I mean it wasn't all bad ,, even the ending was just a bit improbable if i might say.

The cast were all good ,, Olga Kurylenko did a good job ,, such a talented beauty ,, I loved her back in 2007 Hitman ,, and to be honest haven't seen her much since ... That Dougie character "Craig Conway" was also really good.

Overall ,, Not the scariest movie in history ,, but it's not bad at all ... watch it at 2:00 am and you'll know what i mean :D

When a man is apparently murdered by his wife Helena (Rosie Fellner) during the night, the rookie criminal psychologist Dr. Kate Fuller (Olga Kurylenko) is assigned to investigate whether she should go to prison or to an institution. She promises to Helena´s little daughter Sophie that her mother would stay with her. But when the woman claims that a demon killed her husband during a sleep paralysis, Dr. Fuller sends her to an institution. However she decides to investigate the case further and discovers a creepy truth about an ancient demon that attacks people with sleep paralysis.

"Mara" is a flawed but creepy horror film, with a demon that attacks during the sleep and slightly recalls Freddy Krueger. The viewer startles many times and the greatest flaw is how easy and quickly Kate discovers the truth about the demon checking the documents Dougie had gathered and studied for a long time. The ambiguous conclusion is also great. My vote is six.

Whatever you do, do NOT sleep!

Having problems falling asleep at night? Are you tossing and turning in bed all night? Or are frightening nightmares disturbing your well-deserved sleep? Well, in that case, I advise you not to watch "Mara", because it could possibly get worse. Now, I myself have absolutely no problems with that and always enjoy a carefree night's sleep. To be honest this film won't be the cause of me lying awake in bed while staring frightened at the ceiling. In itself it wasn't a bad movie, but I didn't think it was too original. And certainly not scary. "Mara" is a kind of "A Nightmare on Elm Street" with a similar creature as in "Mama" who surprises certain people with a nightly visit. The reason why some enjoy this privilege is a little bland. I am certain that half of the world's population would be eligible for this.

Kate (Olga "Oblivion" Kurylenko) is a psychologist who is called upon in a murder case. A murder case in which a wife killed her husband in his sleep. Kate has to use all her psychological knowledge to judge the suspect's mental state. At first, it seems like Kate is a wise person who uses her analytical, down-to-earth reasoning to come to a final conclusion. But as she gets entangled in the mystery of the demon who visits poor souls during their sleep (in different stages), this intellectual attitude seems to disappear like snow in the sun. Believe me. Would I experience a few frightening confrontations with this illustrious creature, I would really believe in what those others were saying. Moreover, if I had visible evidence on video, I certainly would go to the detective who's investigating the case to let him know what I discovered. Oh, but not our Kate. Oh no. She's dead silent about it.

The fact that the succubus Mara eerily resembles the phenomenon of "Mama", isn't coincidental. That's because the person who played both creeps is one and the same. Namely the Spanish actor Javier Botet. Again such a creepy, skeletal creature that walks in a staggering way. In addition to that, she also produces eerie noises. It sounds like the horrible cracking of bones. But unfortunately, she appears in the distance. In the dark, you can hardly see her. And apart from a few (very predictable) jump scares, there's actually nothing to be scared about. I'm certain the sleep deprivation is the cause of their hallucinations. But that's just my sober, realistic side speaking.

No, you really can't say this film is fascinating. There were even a few moments that it felt as if I had symptoms of sleep paralysis myself. But that's because of the film itself. The funny thing about such films is that they always come up with a second scientist who is skeptical about the event. And even when it's obvious that inexplicable things are happening, he approaches the phenomenon scientifically and tries to give a rational explanation for it. Apart from the phenomenal (on the physical level) acting of Javier Botet and the acceptable acting of Olga Kurylenko, it was especially Craig Conway who impressed and convinced as the war veteran Dougie, who's fighting against falling asleep. Unfortunately, the lack of tension and the sleepwalking pace make it look rather monotonous. Are you a newbie in the field of horror, then "Mara" could make an impression. For the seasoned horror fanatics, it's pretty sleep-inducing.

This had such promise, however most of that was imposed by the 6.7 rating it was enjoying on IMDB. Sadly I realised this was from less than 80 reviews AFTER I had watched it. The story starts well, it's an interesting set up that many can empathise with. However it ends as a drawn out cliche that lacks any thought or adventure. Avoid this straight to DVD future non classic!

+smootg pictures. The only good thing in this movie -Cheap jumpscares -Booming sound effects every now and then -Bad stereotyped character (ignorant non believer detective, ignorant non believer sleep researcher, edgy makeup on fleek kinda cool assistant researcher) -soap opera-ish dramatic scene -She (the main character, can't remember her name) went to dougie for advice but then said that he's just splurting sleep deprived nonsense (gurl what) -prolonged ghost appearance at the end

First Of All , I Want To Give Credit To Olga Kurylenko Because Have Done A Good Job In This Film As Criminal Psychologist Kate Fuller , Who Investigates The Murder Of A Man And Is Haunted By Demon Who Kills People In Their Sleep . Unfortunately , The Storyline In This Film Is Too Slow And Boring . This Film Can Make You Fall Asleep In The Cinema . I Give 4.9/10 For This Film . I'm So Disappointed .

Sleep demon Mara comes to paralyzes you, taunts and then ends you. Not much to see here people. It's slow, boring and lack lustre. A film that deals with sleep deprivation via an evil spirit. But the remedy to that would be to watch this crap snorefest. This was just awful.

Utterly predictable, not interesting. The visuals are nice, and Olga tries hard, but it doesn't help much. This film doesn't even need spoilers for you to know what's going to happen.

The ghost would've been scarier without the knuckle sound effects. She now just sounds old. And could she really not move faster?she's a stupid ghost. An infant in nappies moves faster. If the ghost moved at slow speed, the movie would only be 24 minutes of your life, but now, I wasted 98minutes because of ultra slow-Mo ghost scenes

Ok it wasn't scary really & it started to get predictable once "she reached stage 4"... Wasn't a bad movie, but again another "scary movie" that wasnt so scary. The character was kinda different, but didn't help with the scare factor. Another horror movie with PREDICTABLE JUMP SCARES!

Some of the ratings are too hard on this movie in my opinion. Mara was not amazing, but I genuinely enjoyed it! The plot was predicatable, but the acting and atmosphere still made it hold my attention. There were a few cheesey moments that were supposed to be scary, but it was surprisingly visually appealing and had pretty decent makeup for a low budget movie. I would rate it a 6.5, but since that's not an option I'm giving it a 7. I would consider watching it again at some point in the future.

Idk why everyone is rating it so low. Was it the best movie I've ever seen? Definitely not. But it wasn't the worst either. There were plenty of areas that could have been improved but I kinda liked it overall. It's not a "blood and guts" movie and isn't full of terrifying jump scenes but does have a sort of sense of doom hanging over it that no matter what "Mara" will get you eventually. I do think some of the acting at times wasn't believable and I was a bit annoyed at some of the choices they made when putting it together. But for a low budget film it wasn't bad.

Nothing special for real. It wasn't bad or good movie it's really hard to explain. I believe film directors don't see difference between guilty and forgiveness. There are no horror you won't see anyone being tortured or something. Also the special effects and ending scene was rly hideous.

I rather enjoyed this film. It didn't act like a typical horror film nor was it a typical thriller. I liked that it had identifiable act breaks, midpoint, etc (which you don't find in all horror films these days) but it also didn't follow a strict story structure (which seems to be becoming more and more popular). Although the film didn't have any sections that were too slow, it did race through some detail that could've been used. If this were a drama I'd be a little more critical but being a horror film I think it was all in all well done. Plus it had turning an extra light on for the first couple nights, so it did it's job.

If your a serious horror fan keep going. This is not for you, this is for people who think they like horror but find things like the children's writing in the opening credits CREEPY. OOOOHHHHH. Seriously, this is a joke. And it's not personal or politics so I'm not going to hype it up cuz I FEEL BAD FOR THE REVIEW. IT'S A TERRIBLE, AWFUL, GARBAGE MOVIE. 0 stars.

As a horror movie addict, im proud to say that ive seen my fair share of horror movies, this one i gave it a try. Why? Its has Olga Kurylenko on it and for me she was one of the best Bond Girls sooo lets see what this girl can do! What i didnt knew at the time is that i was witnessing a career suicide. Everything since the performing, the predictability, the secondary actors...it was just sad to see great potential to be destroyed like this. The story has a great potential, but it was miserably explored, it makes you aware of an old evil entity, preceding Jesus Christ that kills people on their sleep, just to give the viewer the idea that its all due to guilt that people carry with them. You have 1h39m +/- of strange reactions between characters, strange questions and aswers that shouldnt exist and make no sense at all, the logic isnt there, and you can pretty much tell what will happen next. I recommend this movie ONLY if you have sleeping problems!

I liked the concept and the poster so gave it a chance. It's a good horror film. Starts slow. First half is really good, the atmosphere was creepy. Olga Kurylenko was broken but likeable which is very hard to pull off in a horror film. Olga Kurylenko plays her role very well, from the beginning there is a sense that she is not well fitted in the world, may be running from something, may be hiding something. Those little facial expressions make sense as the film goes on.

The film focuses on Olga's decent to madness which is ironic and there are few creepy/scary scenes here and there to keep things interesting.

The film could have been a lot better. I would have loved to learn more about Mara's history, they could have focused more on the victims agony but it could have been a lot worse.

The film deserves 6.5+ I rated it 8 because I liked how it ended.

As someone who watches almost exclusively horror films for entertainment, I can say that I've definitely seen worse. It holds suspense throughout and plays on the idea of sleep paralysis rather than just sticking to the whole demon plot line. However, there are several inconsistencies in "Mara's" behavior and the way she creeps up on Kate differs from the way she treats her other victims. For example, Kate falls asleep during stage three but doesn't begin to see Mara while awake until she dozes while on the ferry. Secondly, Dougie says she has to sleep for 20 minutes in order for Mara to appear but when she dozes in the tub. She was definitely not asleep for the twenty minutes needed to fall in to a deep sleep as dougie describes. This also leaves the Ferry micronap in a strange category despite Mara's immediate appearance following it. Another side note is that if a detective were investigating a crime and one of the family members blamed a drug dealer, they would definitely follow that up. It's quite a stretch that Kate would have to do all of that detective work by herself. Finally the cliche of Sophie forgiving Kate but Sophie's mother remaining blame... I though it was the person's guilt, not the person's inability to reconcile with the person they've wronged. All in all, decent script, decent acting but they obviously lacked a person to look over continuity.

I read the reviews and I went into this movie thinking it was gonna be bad. This movie freaked me the hell out. It was slow at first but the atmosphere put me on the edge then when it started moving faster it just pushed me over; it was over-whelming and I did gasp in quite a few parts. I'm a grown woman and I took my phone with me to the bathroom cause I was scared of the dark. It was a scary movie and good for that genre. I definitely would recommend this movie!

Starts off decently enough with a creepy premise that's been done before. As it turns out its been done before only ten times better. I was a little intrigued to see Kurylenko as essentially the only main character and she does a decent job, but the script fails her entirely. Starting off as a competent, strong character she quickly deteriorates into what we unfortunately expect from women in a horror film...incompetent and helpless. She does a good job with it, but ultimately the film's undoing is it is boring. Lost interest half way through although I did go back the next day and watch the second half. It wasn't any better. As one reviewer said, if this is your first horror film or it hits home for you for some reason in particular I could see rating it higher. But for the average person this doesn't add anything to the genre and is a poor stand alone movie.

01/12/2019 Lots of female screaming. Lots of quick, sharp bangs with the occasional creep-O music/sounds. Not impressed with this movie in any way. Glad it's over. Hope I never watch it again. Bon Appetit
