The title "A Fox, a Rabbit, and a Cabbage" is an old riddle which FBI Agent Pepper (Keegan-Michael Key) asks FBI Agent Budge (Jordan Peele) in the FBI file room. The answer to the puzzle is that, the man first takes the rabbit with him as fox won't eat the cabbage, then come back and take cabbage with him and bring back rabbit from other end and keep the rabbit and take fox to the other end, hence fox and cabbage are safely on other end and finally later come back and take rabbit with him, hence safely taking all three to the other end.

Lou (Keith Carradine) tells Malvo (Billy Bob Thornton) he was a state trooper for 18 years. In Murder Ordained (1987), he played Kansas State Trooper John Rule, who solved an unusual homicide.

Lester (Martin Freeman) solves the riddle of the farmer who has a fox, a rabbit and a cabbage, and must get all three across the river, but can only carry two at a time. A nearly identical puzzle was solved by his character Tim Canterbury in The Office (2001) episode The Office: Training (2001).

This episode is named after the brain-teaser asked by Bill Budge (Jordan Peele) to his partner in the episode, the solution is given by Lester Nygaard (Martin Freeman) at Morton's Fork.

Title: The episode title refers to one of a number of river crossing or logistical puzzles, where the object is to move a set of items across a river subject to various restrictions. Puzzle logic is always that there are three objects, A, B, and C, such that neither A and B nor B and C can be left together. These kinds of puzzles date back to medieval times and are part of fork literature in various parts of the world.

Burt (Stephen Root) calls "Mike" "Friend-o". This term is used by Anton Chigurh - directed at someone he might kill - in the movie No Country for Old Men (2007). Chigurh actually kills the character played by Stephen Root, who is playing Burt here, in that movie.

Billy Bob Thornton (Lorne Malvo) & Colin Hanks (Gus Grimly) also worked together on Parkland (2013) as Forrest Sorrels & Dr. Malcolm Perry respectively.

Martin Freeman (Lester Nygaard) & Billy Bob Thornton (Lorne Malvo) also worked together on Love Actually (2003) as John & The US President respectively.

The previous episode was ended so abruptly that it made me wanting for more as soon as possible. This episode undoubtedly exceeded my expectations. The beginning of the episode shows to what an extent Malvo is cruel and is capable of doing anything.

The episode continues with some nail-biting,tension-rousing moments and the final act steals the show. The end shows the real character of Lester. The end was a complete shocker!

The performances by Billy Bob Thornton as we've seen throughout the series is chilling and terrifying.Martin Freeman shows the creepiness developing in Lester flawlessly.Allison Tolmon was great as always.

The show is consistent with it's quality I seriously cannot wait for the finale to air.

Get a little drunk and you do something that complicates your life to the nth degree. Malvo is in Las Vegas when Lester gets his award. Lester feels the need to confront him in front of some "friends." Instead of calmly getting out of there, he does this and the venom is unleashed. The suspense involved with his trying to get home with his pretty wife, is sustained for several minutes. He also shows us, in this episode, that he has no moral sense. He has sold out his humanity for self. Meanwhile the FBI is getting involved in the case and Molly has made a connection which further alienates her with her boss. This is a great episode with all sorts of implications for the future. Where can Lester run now? Malvo continues to be almost supernatural figure. The scene in the diner with Molly's father is so tension filled, I can't wait to see the next.

And well, it did wonderfully.

We are given an intro to what might have brought our characters to Vegas and then it starts, in an elevator, what Fargo, as a film or TV show, is famous for. This specific scene will cause your jaw to drop and it will hit the ground at the climax. That is the kind of narration this ninth episode has.

The investigation has had a breakthrough and Malvo is again mad at something. Lester's character development is amazing and now he is more than the person he was in episode 1. I simply loved the 50 minutes of suspense. Still, there is one discrepancy about the Vegas elevator scene (having no surveillance cameras) which seems fabricated. Given that the incident occurs in 2007, it was hard to digest.

BOTTOM LINE: FARGO is turning out to be more gorier and even more fabulous as 2014's best crime-drama series.

Trust Lester to ruin everything when he was at a good point in his life by doing such a stupid thing as to introduce himself to a mass murderer in front of people and not expect repercussions. If only he had approached him in the first place. If only he had heeded Lorne's advice and walked away. If only he had just said "no". Lester isn't a stupid guy. He makes it out of seemingly inescapable situations using his wits. So why is it that he puts everything at risk unnecessarily? I believe he does it because the whole "changed man" persona is a pretence. It's the image he presents to the world and how he likes to see himself. Going up and talking to Lorne and when given a choice not backing down is a part of the stupid idea of the person he has convinced himself he is. The persona is dropped when he's placed in any true risk as instead of helping Lorne clear the bodies he legs it. It's also a cowardly thing to set his wife up like that, a wife who clearly loves him. Even worse, he doesn't at all seem distraught by her death. He truly is an uncaring monster at heart. If only Linda hadn't had that crush on him, she wouldn't have fallen victim to his ruthlessness.

I still find the chief's reluctance to accept Molly's evidence on Lester a bit silly. And how come he just so happens to listen now, at the time when Lorne is hunting down Lester? Slightly coincidental, no?

As always they keep the screenplay tight by encountering close calls between the rivals and addition to that Martin Freeman's character is brutally devastating and evil at the same time striking out the perfect balance that often writers fail to provide to the audience.

Lester stoops to a new low, putting himself before the ones he loves. Honestly I'm really hoping Malvo gets him at least by the end of the series because at this point Lester is the new antagonist, a force of toxicity that needs to be eradicated

Self-preservation is supposed to be a basic instinct. Therefore, Lester going to greet is old "pal" Malvo in the Vegas hotel is one of the stupidest plot development I have ever seen.

Besides being totally coincidental - seriously, what are the chances - nobody, not even a mororic, smug, self-satisfied ass like Lester would put his life in danger by basically hanging a target on his chest and asking Malvo to shoot.

So far I quite liked this series but this episode is just way too idiotic. The one year gap makes little sense and I am really looking forward to see Lester and Malvo wiping each other out.

PS sort of scary to see how many fans the psycho Malvo character got. Yet another master of creepines, whose fake smile is apparently fooling everybody....
