Arthur Holmstrom, recently chair-promoted treasurer of the local, Freemason-style charitable Monarch Lodge, is knife-murdered in his club HQ office. Detective Lassiter, a member, and president Irving Parker, his soon-ex's father, ask Shawn and his unamused father Henry, a former member, to solve the case discretely. Gus enjoys approaching the exclusive membership, including many prospective medical clients, and thus contributes suspicious observations to a plot of black books and deadly ambition.

Shawn mentions that one of the portraits in the lodge lobby looks like "Chuck from Wonder Years." The portrait is of writer Andy Berman, who did in fact play Chuck on the show The Wonder Years (1988)

Hanging in the lodge lobby are portraits of past members. Most of these portraits are of crew members from the show, including creator Steve Franks and writer Andy Berman.

Spot the Pineapple: on the wall mural behind Shawn when the guys exit Gus' vehicle at Dr. Downs' office.

When Shawn approaches the guard watching the door at the lodge, he recites a number of apparently nonsensical phrases in order to enter the lodge. Among what he says is, "Girlfriend in a Coma," and "Hairdresser on Fire," both titles of songs sung by British pop singer, Morrissey.

When Shawn and Gus speak to Mr. Parker's secretary, Gus uses a false name for Shawn, calling him "William Zane". This is clearly a nod to actor "Billy Zane", who is mentioned numerous times throughout the series.

The photo of the woman on Holmstrom's desk is in fact real life mother of actor Corbin Bernson, the late Jeanne Cooper.

One of Gus's new clients is called Dr. Nigam, named after co-producer Anupam Nigam.

The lodge is also Johnny Smith's home on the series The Dead Zone.

36-24-36 is also the measurements cited by Sir Mix A Lot before mocking it with, "Only if she five three!" in the song 'Baby Got Back.'

While Shawn tries to get Gus to crack the safe, Shawn notices a picture of a woman close by and tells Gus to "Try 36-24-36." It doesn't work. Gus then notices the picture, laughs, makes fun of Shawn's estimation skills, and dials in 36-24-38, successfully opening the safe. The original numbers 36-24-36 are the measurements of the woman from the song Brick House.

In the episode, Lassiter's father in law says he hasn't traveled abroad in over three years and hasn't left the country since Lassiter's wedding. If Lassiter only got married about three years ago then he would have only been married a year before he and his wife separated.

At the very beginning, young Shawn and Gus are chanting "kyrie eleison," from the song Kyrie by Mr. Mister. The phrase is Greek for "Lord, have mercy."
