The powers that be begin to harass Billy McBride. They seem to want to stop at nothing to dissuade him from participating in this case. This part of the story begins to build them up as pure evil. I will not spoil the ending, but the events presented will not deter him from his efforts, but rather they will drive him on. Apparently, these big time firms are in bed with whomever they want to be. We meet several women who are at the center of the big law firm and, for the first time, a representative from their bosses. This is an outstanding mini-series and Billy Bob Thornton, one of our quirkiest actors is at his absolute best. I can't wait for the next installment.

Billy gets lots of determination trying to help his client after he gets to know her better than most clients. This is a start for the determination he shows in pursiut of this case. The other part is he is fighting the firm of Cooperman (Hurt) that terminated him in the past. We are just starting to learn through flashbacks about that. Billy's ex-wife still works for the firm.

We start to see the devlopment of Billy's releationship with the ex-wife, and with their daughter which will continue to develop as the season progresses. We are just scratching the surface of Coopermen, and the women lawyers involved with this case as well.

This court room is so crooked and convoluted, that as the trial begins it appears Cooperman has bought everybody in order to close this case before it even starts. The writing is great here as it seems Billy is going to need a CPR effort to keep the case alive. Then there is the death of his client to deal with, an accident that is tragic and suspicious.

In this well-filmed episode in L.A., washed-up attorney Billy McBride tries to get clean and sober for his first major court appearance. But he is facing long odds against the diabolical law partner Cooperman (William Hurt) and his all-too-efficient legal staff.

One of the most interesting characters is one of Cooperman's lawyers, a mousy nerd. The major dramatic question is whether she will recognize the decency of Billy and the corruption of Cooperman.

There is a big build-up to the court appearance before the judge known as The Gnome. Billy immediately recognizes that the judge is in the hip pocket of Cooperman, and the case is dismissed. But when Billy insults the judge and is charged with contempt, he knows that he can now introduce evidence in the case and make allegations of the the judge's malfeasance.

SPOILER ALERT: As soon as Billy is leaving court with his client Rachel--Boom! She is run over by a van.
