A small gypsy family, consisting of an old grandfather, a girl. Ritra, fourteen, and a boy ten years of age, settle down at a fair in order to earn a little money by singing and dancing. As soon as they commence, a policeman appears, demanding in a coarse manner to see their papers, and as the poor people have no papers nor permission to perform at the fair, they are taken to the police station, in spite of the protest from the onlookers. The old man is fined, and as he has no money to pay the fine, he is imprisoned. He is heartbroken, and the children are crying desperately as they are taken to an infant asylum. But the gypsy blood does not allow Ritra to remain quiet in her bed while the grandfather is in prison. When everything is quiet at home, she sneaks into the room where her brother is sleeping, wakes him, dresses him, and escapes with him through the window. In the middle of the night the two desperate children ring the bell at the home of the judge. He does not like to be ...
