Adam & Luke Simms move to Walnut Grove. Luke falls in love with Nellie. Nellie likes him but he doesn't like to wear shoes and he wears overalls without a shirt over his long underwear, so Harriet thinks he is beneath her and demands that Nellie stop seeing them. Luke gets Mary to help him pick out a ring for Nellie's birthday and Nellie thinks Luke was playing with her affections. Nellie cries to Miss Beadle and Miss Beadle goes to Mr. Simms to tell him that she won't have that kind of treatment in her school. Mr. Simms explains the situation and Miss Beadle starts to fall in love with Adam Simms. Luke and Nellie decide that they are going to elope. They get married and go to the hotel. That is where Harriet, Nels, Adam, and Ms. Beadle find them. They take them back to the Justice of the Peace and have him un-marry Luke and Nellie, but while they are there, Adam Simms and Eva Beadle get married.

When a new family, father and son, move to town, a few of the women folk find themselves falling in love, Nellie and Miss Beadle.

Nellie has fallen so madly in love that she sees only a 'prince charming', but her mother sees nothing but a 'pig' farmer and her daughter is not going to get married to become the 'pig' queen of Herotownship. Nellie and Luke Sims sneak around behind her mother's back to be together and falling madly in love and decide that they should elope, so off they go to Sleepeye and the justice of the peace, who on this night finds no peace.Mrs. Olsen has some memorable lines in this episode, such determination to keep her daughter from making a big mistake. Mrs. Olsen, Miss Beadle and Nellie carry their characters to new heights in this heartwarming and fun episode. You are going to end up with split ribs after watching everyone run around and stopping one marriage from taking place only to see another one happen. This episode is a total must see.

Looks as though Nellie Oleson's got a crush. Who's the gullible fool, you might ask? Luke Simms. He and his pa, Adam are the newest members of the community. Luke was a tall, lanky boy who didn't wear shoes, because he didn't believe in them. Regardless, Nellie fawned all over him and even invited him to supper. Harriet was reluctant, until she realized the mercantile would soon be getting their business, as new farmers need plenty of new equipment, so the family puts on their Sunday best and greet Luke, who comes in wearing overalls and still no shoes. He scarfs down half the roast and reveals that he and his pa are pig farmers. Needless to say, Luke made a very bad first impression and Harriet forbid Nellie from ever seeing him again. You know that's not gonna stick, she's going to keep seeing that bumpkin on the side. One night, Harriet caught them and raised Cain, then she decided to pass the responsibility of talking to that boy's father onto Miss Beadle, so against her better judgment, she rode out and talked to Adam about it, who admitted he saw no harm in two kids seeing each other regardless of circumstance. Adam Simms: Father of the Year 1881, huh? But besides that, he was a warm, caring man who thought Miss Beadle was a thoughtful, caring teacher, and they developed a first-name basis with each other. I think Adam and Eva make a great pair. Next day, to Nellie's dismay, Luke went out with Mary and not her after school. They went into the mercantile to buy an imitation ruby ring, and when Nellie asked about them later, Harriet ripped her heart out by saying he was buying Mary an engagement ring. Turns out, Luke had Mary help him pick out the ring for Nellie's birthday. Oh, is she going to be surprised.

So Luke gave Nellie the ring and all was forgiven. They take a moonlit walk, and Nellie receives her first kiss under the fireworks, which were very symbolic. Adam and Miss Beadle were getting closer too. After they'd only known each other a week, Adam got up the courage and proposed to her. Luke proposed to Nellie, and neither her and her teacher weren't quite sure if they would make good wives. They talk it over and decide to except their respective proposals. Except in Nellie and Luke's case, their only obstacle was Mrs. Oleson, so they would have to elope. Unfortunately, big mouth Willie revealed their plans to Nels and Harriet, who rode out to the Simms' place. Harriet was toting a shotgun, but this wouldn't be no ordinary shotgun wedding, because it was going to be used on the groom before the ceremony, or it will if Harriet has her way. So the Olesons fall off their horse and then go to the door. Adam claimed he hadn't seen the kids, but he reckoned they ran off to get hitched, and seems surprisingly open to the notion. Father of the Year, remember? So they hop in Adam's buckboard and make like the wind over to Sleepy Eye, where Luke and Nellie had awakened the justice of the peace to perform the ceremony. Luke bumbling through his vows and annoying the minister to no ends. By the time Adam, Miss Beadle, Nels and Harriet arrived, they were too late. Nellie was married. So the furious parents tracked the newly-weds to a hotel, where Shotgun Harriet nearly blew Luke's head off, but thankfully only damaged the cheap ceiling. That boy took off in a blur, but Adam caught him and was visibly mad at him... waffle much? So Nellie and Luke were dragged back to the sleep-deprived justice to be un-married. The evening wasn't a total loss, however, as Adam and Eva finally got hitched.

Where do I start? The last ten minutes of this episode were downright hilarious. I loved that justice of the peace, one of the funniest side characters of the series, and his wife Philomena throwing rice at him was the icing on the cake. Luke stumbling over the wedding vows was hysterical. Other than that, the only thing this episode seemed to be lacking was development for Adam and Luke, we barely saw any scenes of them alone together, acting as father and son. Rather, they were just two fellas thrown in for Miss Beadle and Nellie to fall in love with. I wonder if their marriage lasted for more than half an hour, would it have changed Nellie? I know when she gets married for real at the end of Season 6, she becomes a real sweetheart. But then Percival is twice the man Luke is, so who knows? Nellie is a beautiful girl, but on the outside, on the inside she's just vicious, so maybe she would have made life hell for Luke. On the other hand, it was nice seeing Miss Beadle finally settle down. She is now Mrs. Simms, and I don't think we ever see her husband again. So if you like Miss Beadle, and you can stomach a whole episode dedicated to Nellie and Harriet, then check out "Here Come the Brides." That last ten minutes is worth it any day!

This is another one of my favorite episodes. Yes, I know I have a lot of them! I love the romance between Eva Beadle and Adam Sims. It's so beautiful and simple, and really comes together when a young love between Nellie Olsen and a new boy in school. Interestingly, the new boy in school wears overalls over underwear and no shoes. He's the most unlikely person for Nellie to be interested in, yet it seems to be love at first sight.

The story is sweet, and Nellie acts almost human in this episode. She's pretty sweet when she's in love. Perhaps that's the key. It's amazing how love-swept she really is. She even shares a kiss with her intended!

Mrs. Olsen, though, is still her own self. She totally rejects the romance between Luke and Nellie and does everything she can possible do to stop it. But true love can't be stomped out. In fact, when Harriet really tries to put the brakes on, they take a drastic measure. I'm not going to reveal any of this because it's so good.

The picnic scene is my favorite part (besides the ending). I think the proposal is so romantic!!!
