The role of John was initially cast with another actor who dropped out a few weeks before filming began. The producers attempted to recast the role but couldn't find an actor who was willing to commit to the location and shooting schedule. As a joke, Nick Nielsen called his friend from college theater, Rob Davenport, and asked him to fly all the way from Texas to Washington, a week before principle photography, to shoot the film. Rob Davenport took him seriously and bought the plane ticket right there. Nick Nielsen said that had his friend not agreed to it that he would have had to cancel the entire production.
While filming the climax, both Scott C. Brown and Robert Riedl actually broke down into tears and had to take a moment afterwards to calm down. Director Nickolas Nielsen was so amazed by this, he called it "the first moment when he actually felt like a director."
The cabin they used to shoot in was actually dilapidated with the roof caving in on one side. The director chose to use the location due to budgetary reasons and because the cabin was originally built in the 1920's, making it ideal to shoot a period film.
The gun that Olaff uses belonged to the directors great-grandfather, also named Olaff.
The tweed jacket that Robert Paul Davenport wears is a replica jacket similar to one that Matt Smith wears on Doctor Who (2005). Also Robert's character is named John Baker, an homage to both Tom Baker and Colin Baker from the classic Doctor Who (1963).
The fake blood was created by mixing corn syrup, food coloring, cornstarch, cocoa powder, hot water, and cherry flavored water powder.
