Following nearly half a century of colonization, it's no wonder myth works better than authoritative restriction - to conserve nature above the hydroelectric dam of Riam Kanan. History has been unforgiving and cruel; locals took to mining. As minerals run low and tempers run high (violent murder is common place on the camps), they are now becoming farmers. But they are deeply weary of the government, seeking to regulate their activities. However, while this all seems disconsolate, local people put faith in a taboo ritual, an ancestral tradition, which they believe has played a role in the very, very gradual improvements to life above the dam. They put their faith in myth. And the old timers say that it's working.
