Good Wrinkles (1951) Online

Sunny-sweet the prune shows us how prunes are made from certain kinds of plums, why they're so good for you, and, in live action, some recipes made with prunes. As a subplot, he also explains why California prunes are better than those from the Pacific Northwest and other areas. (Of course, Sunny may be a bit biased, since this film was sponsored by a California organization of prune growers).

I like prunes, but they have a public relations issue. That's why Sunsweet, the the California company that markets them in the US, has produced a lot of propaganda. The best was probably the series of TV commercials produced by Stan Freberg.

This is one of their earlier efforts. It is a non-theatrical cartoon produced for them by the longtime animation partnership of Hugh Harman and Rudolf Ising. Like many of their efforts, no expense was spared in terms of technical animation. The art in this one is quite lovely, using the elaborately pretty style called "Candybox" that was going out of favor because it was too expensive. They hired John Nesbitt, a well-known radio and movie personality, to narrate.

Unfortunately, they wound up with an uninspiring cartoon. Prunes are dull. Prunes are old-fashioned. A humorous campaign such as Freberg's is watchable and memorable, The insipid recitation of facts and forced pandering of a biography of starring prune "Sunny Sweet" is just banal
