Secrets of the Manor House Secrets of Henry VIII's Palace (2012– ) Online

Hampton Court was built as extravagant renaissance castle by Henry VIII's trusted chief minister, chancellor cardinal Wolsey, yet often used as a favorite among the Tudor king's over 50 castles along the Thames, even before it was signed over in a vain attempt to prevent utter disfavor after his eminence's failure to obtain papal dispensation to divorce the Spanish queen Catherine of Aragon. Henry kept remodeling it for his five successive wives. * After Henry's death, it was neglected for a century and a half, until William and Mary commissioned Christopher Wren to rebuild it in modern style, luckily left half-way due to budget restraints. James Stuart also favored it . The Hanoverian 'Georgians' again resided there, until queen Caroline fell in disgrace after abused prince of Wales Frederic sneaked out his pregnant consort to give birth in London.*

This documentary provides an historical, if somewhat romanticized, story of Hampton Court, the palace that became Henry VIII's favorite.

The palace was built by Cardinal Woolsey, a friend of the young king who assumed the throne at age 18. Later it passed into Henry's hands and was his favorite among the many palaces at his disposal. His reign was an ostentatious show of extravagant display and intentional excess. The palace was a reflection of Henry's tastes and his appetites.

As it exists today, the palace is a hybrid of Tudor and Baroque architectural styles. Its many rooms are decorated with remnants of its former tenants, including Henry's six wives. Historical experts discuss the structure itself and how it was modified during Henry's life and after, with interesting facts about life in court.

I particularly enjoyed the information about Henry's personality and the royal lineage. I would have liked more information about the 60 acres of gardens that surround Hampton Court, but this film is a good starting point.
