Nightworld: Lost Souls (1998) Online

Victor Robinson moves into a new country home with his family. Their son Jesse, finds an old Edison invention in the basement. When they turn on the machine, they start hearing children's voices laughing and playing at night. Their mute autistic daughter, Meaghan, becomes more animated; singing and painting figures inside of a circle on the walls. Other strange events start to take place around the house, such as two strange figures burned into the grass and even an attempted break in. After doing some research, Victor discovers that two children were murdered years ago in the town, and their bodies were never found. After visiting the man who confessed to the crime, he is convinced the spirits of those children are trying to warn him that their real killer is still loose.

Thomas Edison's Frequency Harmonizer in the film is based off the rumor that he actually made such a device to communicate with ghosts.

Actor Claudette Roche is married to the film's Director, Jeff Woolnough.

The movie takes place in Ulster County, New York; but in the fictional town of Chesapequa.

The woods, canyon, and caves, are all shot on the popular Mullerthal hiking trail in Luxembourg, leading to the Hohllay Cave, which is man-made and was used for mining in the medieval times. It is a national landmark and major tourist attraction.

Claudette Roche's character Dr. Hollings has a University of Michigan diploma on the wall behind her.

When Victor is in city hall, a photo of President Bill Clinton is on the wall behind him.

Ted Rusoff's scenes were filmed in 1 day.

Gary Beadle's character's first name is never mentioned in the film, but is listed in the end credits.

When Victor is snooping around the Garrett house, he finds a photo of Elson and Humphrey under the bed. The photo was taken on the set of the 1998 movie "Riddler's Moon", which was produced by the same production company.

A line was added near the beginning of the movie saying that Barbara Sukowa's character was born in Germany, in order to explain her German accent.

I enjoyed the film, for its own sake. However, I could not help but notice a substantial number of similarities between it and the Orson Scott Card book titled "Lost Boys."

Starting with the introductory scene of the killer (film: we see the killer; book: we are privy to his thoughts), and progressing through a drive through the countryside to a new house. The father works in a technical field where he can be home most of the time (film: bicycle tech manual writing; book: software tech manual writing). His child can contact the dead through an electronic device (film: some strange "Edison" invention, book: the TV). One of the children has a debilitating medical condition (film: autism; book: MS). Both involve a suspicious groundskeeper and interactions with police. In both, the family is nearby a specialized medical institution which is geared towards helping their ill child.

I could go on, but you should read the book for yourself, before I give too much away! If you liked this movie, then you'll love the OSC book.

Please feel free to e-mail me if you have any comments.

I started to watch this movie back in 1999, while trying to record another show that I thought was on, but it ended up being this movie and I only had recorded the first hour of it & have been looking everywhere to find out where I can buy it to see the ending!!!! Help, can anybody tell me where I can purchase this? I know, after 8 years, u'd think I'd forget? Nope, gotta see this ending... I thought it was awesome of what I had seen...I had remembered that the name was Lost Souls, but whenever I did a search, I could never find info on it & I remembered the kids finding a box that did something, so when i read a few others comments, I saw that in there and knew I had the right movie. I was just missing the Nightworld part of the title. But know I have the title, I have to find a place to purchase it.

Lost Souls stars industry veteran John Savage and tells the story of a family who move into a new home and experience unusual events. Among them is a young autistic girl who seems to be at the centre of it all.

Truth is I'm pretty sure I've seen this very same plot before, it certainly isn't even remotely original but thanks to strong performances and a competent director it has an identity of its own.

Though it doesn't all flow together flawlessly it's a harmless little tale but I'd never say it falls under the horror umbrella. I'd call it a supernatural thriller.

Sadly among it's flaws are a few red herrings and unexplained moments/characters that really should have been padded out. Without being the film feels a tad incomplete.

Regardless Lost Souls is a just about passable effort even if you'll see the twist coming by no later than half way through the film.

The Good:

Well made

John Savage

The Bad:

Twist is a tad predictible

Too many unanswered questions

Things I Learnt From This Movie:

I suddenly want a train set!

Right from the start, this is a gripping horror. You know there's someone out there, watching...

Some of the scenes reminded me of Poltergeist - inexplicable happenings, strange voices, dramatic music and the like. Very creepy throughout and full of suspense.

My only criticism is that the ending is slightly O.T.T., but it's a good watch all the same.

This is a drama about a family discovering a child murder is living near by, and his 2 victims, young children are communicating with a young autistic girl via ancient Edison invention.

Its so sad how those two kids got stuffed in bags and buried.

I saw this movie once on Fox Family's "13 days of Halloween." Overall, I thought it was a really great movie. I voted it for a 10 out 10. It is one of my favorite movies. And I recommend anyone who likes mystery and horror films watch this great movie. Please Enjoy the film on Youtube also.

The Robinson family - him her, and not quite 2.4 children - move to a big house in a rural area for a specific purpose. Their daughter is autistic, and they want her to attend a special school. Eight years previously a boy and a girl had been murdered in either a single transaction or close to it. A local man had been convicted of the crime on his own confession. He had also confessed to many more murders.

This is not quite an open and shut case because with the help of Thomas Edison no less, the victims appear to be communicating with the daughter. Appear to be? There is some quite obvious haunting early on which is witnessed by more than one person, so the viewer is left in no doubt that it is for real. Unfortunately, apart from a couple of fairly obvious red herrings, that is as good as this one gets.

I'll just be vague about my potential spoiling comments. There are enough canned plot elements in this movie that it's essentially pre-spoiled.

This movie derives a few ideas from a Southern classic, To Kill A Mockingbird. I suppose maybe TKOM got its ideas from some source.... at any rate, after you watch this, you'll say, "Oh yeah, that is a ripoff".

I think the truly entertaining thing about these McMovies is once you've identified a plot element, is to figure out whether they'll stick with the original, or try to twist it around. Not a lot of twists in this one.
