All Quiet on the Western Front Online
A young German soldier's terrifying experiences and distress on the western front during World War I.
This will be the third rendition of this story. The other two being the renown Academy Award winning Best Picture version of Lewis Milestone's "All Quiet on the Western Front" (1930) & the lesser known version of Delbert Mann's "All Quiet on the Western Front" (1979).
All Quiet on the Western Front is not technically positioned as a remake of an older movie, but a re adaptation of a book. Ian Stokell and Lesley Paterson wrote the script based on the 1928 novel by Erich Maria Remarque.
Remarques book was inspired by his own experiences as a German soldier in World War I. It is notable for its realistic depiction of the horrors of battle, and the trouble soldiers face during and even after the fighting. Donaldson's new adaptation will similarly attempt to capture the gritty, brutal reality of trench warfare.
Travis Fimmel who plays Stanislaus Katczinsky in this 2018 movie version also played Ragnar in Vikings (2013) TV series. Ernest Borgnine who played Katczinsky in the Im Westen nichts Neues (1979) TV movie also played Ragnar in Die Wikinger (1958) movie.
The new All Quiet on the Western Front has been in the works for several years. In 2010 it was reported that Daniel Radcliffe was attached to lead but is no longer involved. The project seems to be gaining momentum with Donaldson and is now on track to shoot in Europe next spring.
Another classic is getting updated. Roger Donaldson has signed on to helm a new version of All Quiet on the Western Front, the harrowing saga of a young German soldier fighting from the trenches during World War I.
