Instead of a comedy segment, Ed recalls his early job as a clown on WCAU Philadelphia. Expanding on a news story they discussed on a previous show, Johnny and Ed then comment on how, by waiting for just after midnight on January 1st to make their baby the first one of the year, a family lost out on a $600 tax deduction for the prior year. Dick Cavett talks about his various superstitions, and then recalls how his guest Jerome Rodale - a health food guru known as "Mr. Organic" - died during a 1971 taping of his show which never aired. He then talks about the TV Guide special he is hosting about the history of television. Cavett also does a trick, balancing a cane on the front of his palm.
