As this episode opens Connor, Abby, Sarah and Danny are in a remote building dressed as though for a 1930's party; Danny does outside and finds himself face to face with a giant birdlike creature. After this prologue we jump back some time; Danny is testing the ARC's security while Connor and Sarah try to figure out how to use the artefact... nobody knows that Christine Johnson is watching their every move with hidden cameras. Danny spots one of the cameras just after Connor activates the artefact; immediately they are ordered to take the artefact to a safe house. They get out moments before Christine arrives and takes control of the ARC. Not surprisingly the safe house is the building we saw in the opening scene. The four find various things including the fancy party clothes; the soon after an anomaly opens and the birds start to attack them. With no weapons it will be a struggle to survive. Meanwhile Abby's brother has invited friends round to play poker and as he loses he puts Rex on the table.

This was an enjoyable episode. The prologue was intriguing and the main story provided plenty of excitement and some great moments. Christine is a good antagonist so it was a lot of fun when she is ultimately thwarted by her own arrogance. Belinda Stewart-Wilson does a fine job in the role; Ben Miller is equally impressive as James Lester, they have some great scenes together. Just as impressive are the scenes in the woods where Connor, Abby, Sarah and Danny are dealing with the birds. These scenes are very tense with some genuinely scary moments... even if we must suspend disbelief as they deliberately run into an old mine field and can spot all of the mines! The scenes involving Abby's brother didn't add much to the story but will inevitably have repercussions later. Overall another fine episode with good scares and an interesting story.

The creatures were quite scary and it actually felt like if they were part of the real settings. It was a good surprise considering all scenes occurred in day light. This episode was also heavy on action and in fact they quickly bored me because I'm more into character development, ambiance… But I have to admit that some of them were well done and the characters really seemed in danger. However I hope the writers won't use the same trick over and over because now it's obvious something scary will happen when Abby is involved for example. A scene shouldn't be predictable.

The story could have been better but it was nice to see that they tried to make the new characters grow on us. I still haven't forgotten Nick and Claudia/Jennifer, and probably never will because I don't want to, but as someone pointed out it's nice to see that the other characters are better used. However I'm still not convinced by Sarah and Becker, even Abby is starting to bore me somehow. But I think Danny and Connor works really well together. Moreover the James and Christine arc had a major twist and I'm glad Helen is not the only strong woman on the show anymore. That's why we need her back on the show ! Primeval can't afford to lose an other charismatic character. The anomaly arc was also covered but only during a few minutes.

So overall it was an average episode. It was entertaining and the woods reminded me of The Village. However it didn't convince me to watch the upcoming episode and in fact I don't think I'll come back to Primeval. My favorite characters are out of the picture and it seems the writers prefer to focus on creatures than on the anomaly, when that arc is really interesting.
