The film was shot on full sized VHS in Nampa, Idaho in 1992. During this time, David Lee Hefner was working at KIVI TV, while Dan Hefner was working at KTRV TV.
Note the exclusive, limited-edition promotional T-Shirt, "Married With Children" worn by Dan Hefner. He acquired the T-Shirt while he was working for KTRV TV, which was a FOX television network affiliate at the time. It promoted their 'England Show', a three-part trilogy of episodes in season 6 that aired on FOX during the Nielsen ratings May Sweeps (May 3, 1992, May 10, 1992, and May 17, 1992).
The apartment where the film takes place was the Hefner Bros. actual apartment, where they were roommates and resided in Nampa, Idaho, USA.
The film was shot consecutively over a period of one night. It incorporated practical effects, trick photography, and utilized the camera's built-in feature for stop-motion sequences.
The full sized VHS camcorder that the Hefner brothers used for the production was purchased by them at a Sears department store on October 16, 1991 for $1000.
The Hefner Bros. stop-motion sequences were accomplished with their full sized VHS cassette camcorder's built-in feature. At the time, the feature was state of the art. The VHS recorder utilized a mechanical, analog flying erase head.
Although most of the post production editing was done at the Hefner Bros. makeshift studio in their apartment, Dan Hefner did some minor finishing touches at the television station that he worked at (KTRV TV). This included color correcting the finished master into black and white, which was originally conceived of during pre-production. It successfully set the tone for an edgier, grittier, atmospheric look that the brothers had hoped to achieve.
One of the earlier films during the 1990s in which the film was made in black and white. It later became a popular trend and the craze continued throughout the decade with films including: Schindler's List (1993), Clerks (1994), Ed Wood (1994), In the Bleak Midwinter (1995), and Pi (1998).
The film was entirely funded by the Hefner Bros.
One of the earliest, limited batch of film projects to be titled, "The Evil Within". Now commonly overused in a trend of low budget genre films.
