Belonging to a prominent Uttar Pradesh-family of ruthless politicians, Samar Pratap is about to return to his Irish-American girlfriend, Sarah, in the U.S. and obtain a PhD, but cancels his trip when his father, Chandra, is shot dead. He decides to stay put and avenge this slaying but ends up dealing with aspiring politician, Indu Sakseria, who wants to wed him; his brother, Prithviraj, who has been granted control of the Rashtrawadi Party but is facing imprisonment on charges of Assaulting a Police Officer and Sexual Molestation; his cousin, Veerendra, who wants control of the party; and his astute maternal uncle, Brij Gopal - who secretly controls the entire family. Before he could even handle these situations, Sarah arrives in India and will soon accuse him of being a manipulative and conniving politician.

The scene around the car bomb that goes off at about 2h 14m in the movie is similar to the scene in Mario Puzo's "The Sicilian" where Michael's wife gets killed.
Katrina had claimed she deserved a national award for her role but it was mocked later as she hardly had anythin powerful to do in the film.
Vivek Oberoi was signed for Arjun Rampal' s role but opted out.

Raajneeti was first denied a certificate by the censor board of India for their thought that the lead character played by Katrina Kaif is inspired fully or partially from the Congress Party's chief Sonia Gandhi and Rashtriya Janata Dal's chief Rabri Devi. Director Prakash Jha dismissed this allegation, saying his only inspiration was Mahabharata, an epic from ancient India.
The promotions mostly were on Ranbhir and Katrina, Ajay Devgn apparently wasnt happy with his role and walked out of Arakshan but worked in Satyagraha.
According to the film's co-writer Anjum Rajabali, this film is hugely influenced by the epic story from the Indian mythology the "Mahabharat", and is set in the milieu of contemporary electoral politics. So the films characters are going to have the similar dilemmas and experiences drawn from the story of Mahabharat.
Ajay devgan's character was influenced from the Indian epic Mahabharata's's character 'Karna' who was the child of Sun god, that is why his character's name have been kept 'sooraj' which means sun itself.
Its all based on Godfather Michael Corleone life due to he was going to study professor even Micheal who was trying to become Senator. And later due to his father he committed himself in the field which his father left.
Nana Patekar and Naseeruddin Shah finally after so many years, acted together. But the shot taken was from a far distance ( the stage scene).
