A handful of immigrants make a bittersweet pilgrimage back to the land of their birth in this comedy drama. Ten people who have little in common beyond the fact they were all originally from Puerto Rico and now live in New York discover they've won a contest giving them each a free, all-expenses paid vacation -- in Puerto Rico. While some are eager to visit the place they once called home, others are nervous about what they will find and wary about confronting the people and things they left behind. The travelers include Carlotta, who has become a successful businesswoman and philanthropist; Daisy and Baldo, who would like to return to Puerto Rico when they retire, but aren't sure they want to be so far from their daughter, who loves New York City; Chris, who has thoroughly assimilated into Anglo culture (including an Anglo wife) and isn't sure he wants to see Puerto Rico again; Rodolfo, who still pines for the love he left behind; young and attractive Sara; and Matilde and Clotilde, ...

It was originally planned that the premier of the film was to be held aboard a cruise ship headed towards New York City, but that idea was scratched. The premier was held on Thanksgiving weekend at the Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center in New York.C
The movie began filming on Summer 2004, but had to shut down production after four days of studio shooting. On December 2004, the crew went back into production. Actor Teófilo Torres had a mustache for the Summer 2004 shooting, but he shaved it, because he was going to be playing another character in another production that didn't had a mustache. Some lines making reference to not having the mustache were added to the script and a fake mustache had to be made for some scenes.
Most of the interiors of the character's houses were built at the University of the Sacred Heart television studios. Carlota's home interior was shot at the Westin Río Mar hotel. At that same location, Chris and Holly's home was also shot. The reference to the neighbors having their TV set so loud had to be added to the scene. The actual background noise was a Convention been held at the Hotel's lobby.
