If you are looking for a really good period piece drama, this is the one to watch. It has a really good story line and definitely keeps your attention. The directing is great and the characters are so believable. If you are fans of period piece films or even some westerns, then definitely give this one a watch. It also has a mystery and drama aspect to it that keeps you guessing and wondering what is going on. Then you just can't help but to watch what happens next! Sara Canning did a fantastic job as the lead actress. You can definitely see that this storyline had a lot of thought put into it and leaves you wanting more. If you want a good watch and want to see a film that will keep your interest, Black Field is definitely worth your time.

JulietteofOhio • 40 minutes ago Stunning visuals and Sara Canning is a rare talent. As a history major, I was fascinated by the raw country and sheer amount of physical work these women would be required to put in. In the real world, they would both be dead within a year, either from malnutrition, disease, or hypothermia, The father and brothers were reported to have died of typhoid, a water-borne illness, and it would undoubtedly strike the two under-fed, over-worked women. This was a time that required male strength and protection, an asset not valued sufficiently today. In actual fact, the extreme northern plains required a community as even groups of men died on the hostile northern prairies. The only flaws I spotted were the metal artifacts on the dilapidated house and barn. The fixtures, handles, etc., were "antique modern", not the forged iron of the period. Hair and dresses were accurate, as per the post-Civil War era, but the shoes were circa 1900. The setting was bleak, the outlook was bleak, but it was an engrossing film.

This is a well executed Gothic period drama sure to satisfy fans of the genre. The bleak landscapes, wide shots and whining instruments consistently oppress upon the audience a sense of cold and melancholy. The characters reflect the climate, chilly yet compelling. The leads are well cast, but the real star is the script, which perpetually surprises from start to finish. Each new development of the plot and characters feels delightfully unpredictable and ambitious. It has the tone and charm of a Bronte novel, although the story does benefit from being told through film. Every character has motivations which are at first hidden from the audience. If you like your trees bare, your cottages wind-beaten and your heroines dour, then this is a movie you shouldn't miss.
