Still an agricultural backwater, Twente (easternmost Overijssel) was transformed in the late 19th century by modern industries set up by a few enterprising families, like Van Heek and the most versatile Stork. Enschede became a world player in textile, other towns got their own industries. Working conditions were brutal by moderns standards, yet already social progress then, and precursor to modern welfare, although paternalistic industrialist generosity delayed the rise of trade union action and socialism itself for many years.
