VeggieTales: Madame Blueberry (1998) Online

If you're sick and tired of purple dinosaurs and other shows that pander to kids without making any effort to amuse the adults forced to be in the same room with the TV, and especially if you are a proponent of Christian values, you should give VeggieTales a try. The premise sounds silly -- personified vegetables with names like Junior Asparagus and Larry the Cucumber, enacting moralistic tales -- but it comes across well, better than most Saturday-morning cartoons that are on these days. The songs are very catchy, and best of all, the humor is multi-faceted: not only do the stories appeal to kids, but they are also obviously intended to amuse adults (and they succeed admirably, at least among the adults I know who have seen the videos). This particular story involves a blueberry who goes overboard buying stuff at "Stuff-Mart", where you can buy everything you could ever possibly want, until she learns that being thankful for what you have is much more important than having a lot of things.

The only negative thing I have to say about this particular "episode" is that the silly song segment (like an intermission in the middle of the shows) is really lame. Other than that it's wonderful.

I have written a few Veggie Tales reviews before, and since Thanksgiving is today(11/22/18), I thought this would be the perfect one to do today!

"Madame Blueberry" is about this character, who is not just blue in a literal sense but also in an emotional sense. As we here in the opening song, she's so blue since her neighbors have nice things(she's seen them herself). While she has poor things(like tiny spoons), her neighbors have crock pots and sinks with disposals.

Therefore, some salesmen come to her house and take her to Stuff-Mart, where she can get all the good stuff she wants. But as she shops, she meets 2 kids who help her learn that maybe "a happy heart is a thankful heart."

You can most likely see why I am writing this review on Thanksgiving. The moral of the story is to be thankful for what you have. This movie would be perfect to show the family (most likely if you are religious) on this day for that reason. When I was a kid, I used to go downstairs after Thanksgiving dinner to watch this with my cousins-on VHS!

I have other memories with this video too. When my Dad was alive(he died when I was 9), we watched this episode all the time. He even used it to teach me a lesson when I pouted about not being able to buy something I wanted.(That was quite a backfire!)

Veggie Tales videos are also known for their Silly Songs with Larry. This episode has the most popular SS without him. Instead, Mr. Lunt sings His Cheeseburger, where he narrates about Jerry Gourd wanting a cheeseburger after a fast food restaurant closes for the night.

If you want a video to watch on Thanksgiving with the family, this is the one I could recommend the most. Sure you can watch Charlie Brown, but this takes the cake for me! (Or Pumpkin Pie.) And only one gives attention to how we have what we have because of God.

It's short, fun, and great for the family! I recommended seeing this on Thanksgiving, but this is great for any day of the year. That goes for almost any Veggie Tales show!

I keep writing reviews of Veggie Tales because of how much I adore the show. They are memories that will stick with me for life.

I couldn't say that more for anything else.

I didn't think the episode was good or terrible, just weak, I mean, Larry and Bob crying at the end came out of nowhere, and it wasn't needed! I mean, if it just cut back to the counter top with them just fine, this could've been redeemed. While the animation not phenomenal, it's still pretty good, again, you can tell they were trying, they just didn't have the budget to do as well as Larry-Boy! and the Fib from Outer Space! or Josh and the Big Wall! but they were really trying to make it look like the previous two. The only good things I like on this video were the Salesmen's Rap and His Cheeseburger.

"VeggieTales: Madame Blueberry" is an animated short film from 1998, so this one will have its 20th anniversary next year. It runs for slightly over half an hour and is one of the more known entries to the relatively well-known VeggieTales series. And the title already gives away for everybody with an interest in literature (and even for people like myself without this interest) that this is an alternate version of the Madame Bovary story and what it looks like in the VeggieTales universe. Of course, there are Christian messages included as usual, but these are not the problem here. The problem is maybe that this one is not really working out in terms of the story and characters. It is one of the longer VeggieTales and it is easy to see because there are some lengths in here. The characters also aren't too interesting except the main character perhaps, the one mentioned in the title. The supporting vegetable are pretty weak though. In terms of the music, it is bearable, could have been better, could have been worse. The love song by Mr. Lunt is maybe the best part of this one and it says a lot that it's not part of the core story. All in all, not one of my favorite VeggieTales. Gotta give this one a thumbs-down.

We own all the Veggietales tapes, and my son says "The Cheeseburger Song" is his very favorite Silly Song, because the melody is catching and the lyrics are nice. Personally, I think it can't hold a candle to "The Yodeling Veterinarian".
