While You Weren't Looking (2015) Online

WHILE YOU WEREN'T LOOKING is an original story, set in Cape Town. The protagonists are gay and lesbian, from all walks of life, whose intertwining tales present a humourous, inventive and dramatic take on contemporary life in South Africa. It is through the eyes and experiences of a cross-section of queers - black, white and coloured, cruisy singles, married couples with children, city and township dwellers, apartheid survivors and born frees, professionals and skollies - that we see the South African contemporary landscape unfold.

There was a time, not too distant, when SA movies were not much more than lame copy-cat material. Those days are gone! And While You Weren't Looking truly shows that SA film makers have found their own authentic voice. And thank heavens for that too, as the movies made by others (mostly American as it happens) are unfortunate - Amercans are best at telling their own stories and now at long last, i can say Soth Africans are best at telling their own.

Absolutely everything in this movie is excellent IMO. The directing is fresh and convincing, the way the story is introduced, told and edited - totally fresh and convincing. The cast is superb too - am hugely impressed by the level of acting, world class IMO.

The cinema photography is SO fine.... Damn!!! And the music...Now I've gotta have this soundtrack!!!

Also the choice of locations, and those marvelous street scenes filmed in winter; and the dusk & dawn scenes - all quite heartbreakingly beautiful. And the wardrobe and styling is spot on too.

This is a movie I want to buy so I can re-watch it many times. A High Five to everyone involved in this uniquely SA work of Art!!!

PS: you don't have to be gay to appreciate this movie. The story is much bigger than that.
