. . . random Jewish housewife Ethel Rosenberg would be about a decade later during the Witch-Hunting rampages of alcoholic U.S. "Senator" Joe "Mad Dog" McCarthy, R-WI, but as Humphrey Bogart's long-endangered spouse, Ms. Methot could probably smell the advent of Lauren Bacall just around the corner while she's pictured here during REPORT FROM THE FRONT stepping off a vintage airplane with her infamous hubby, "Bogie." Of course, the Historical Record of the following decade would feature the future Captain "Yellow Stain" Queeg and Fourth Mate Bacall embarking upon a Real Life Crusade to Washington, DC, to slay the Red-Eyed Dragon that McCarthy had become, only for the one-time "Sam Spade" to come home with his tail tucked between his legs, digging an early grave with an abject "apology" so sniveling that even Cap Queeg would turn up his nose at it. So-called "tough guys" may not dance, but most of them take a powder during that moment which comes ONCE to every man and nation to decide for the Righteous or Evil Side.

Just watched this PSA (Public Service Announcement) short featuring star Humphrey Bogart on the Hollywood Canteen DVD. In this one, he tells of the valuable things the American Red Cross does to the morale and well-being of the armed forces. As he speaks to the camera, we see footage of how the various soldiers and sailors relax in their off time by playing ping pong or just reading a newspaper. We also see them taking bed rest after suffering in battle with the nurses in aid. At the end, Bogart tells how important your contribution is and to give generously to the theatre, asking for pledges on the organization's behalf, that is playing this short. Oh, and his then wife Mayo Methot is with him but she doesn't say anything...

Warner short has Humphrey Bogart and his wife getting off a plane and being approached by several reporters. Bogart then tells them of his trip to see our troops and explains how American's can help them by giving money to the American Red Cross. I'm really not sure how many of these type of shorts I've watched over the years but all of them remain pretty powerful. Perhaps it's just the site of these legendary actors sticking their necks out to help in any way, shape or form. Perhaps it's because you don't see that type of thing today. No matter what the reason is this film runs just over three-minutes and features Bogart in fine form. He speaks directly at the camera and you can just hear and feel the passion in his voice.
