Skunk Black

This was one of four appearances on the Zane Grey Theater by Robert Ryan and in this one he plays a sheriff who has just hung a man for murder. Almost immediately after he fends off young Johnny Washbrook the younger of the deceased's two sons. But then he has to deal with Harry Dean Stanton the older of the sons who's acquiring a minor reputation as handy with a gun. But Stanton is promising to come after Ryan with a shotgun. Taking no chances.

Betsy Jones-Moreland is Ryan's wife and his deputy Michael Pate are telling him rather stupidly to let it drop. I think once he did fire that weapon in Ryan's direction that argument was pointless.

A kind of rough justice is worked out in the end. Look for a good performance, a standout performance by Jean Inness as the wife of the hanged man and mother Stanton and Washbrook. She has a most realistic assessment of the situation, she knows her boys.
